I forgot the passcode to my I pod touch

I found an old I pod touch that I used to use and I cant remember the passcode. After trying for a while, it eventually said "ipod is disabled- connect to iTunes" and now I cant even try unlocking it. So I connected it with my apple computer and itunes said "itunes could not connect to the ipod touch because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the ipod touch before it can be used with iTunes." So I googled what to do about this, and it said to put my device in recovery mode by holding the home and power buttons. This just turned the device completely off then on again, and itunes still didn't work. What should I do?
