@rcurrieray could be a backlight issue as well as a power board issue. Worst case scenario would be a bad panel. You want to tell us the make and model of your TV. Also, post some good pictures of what your screen shows so we can see what you see. Use this guide Adicionar imagens a uma pergunta já existente for that.
