Can't remove ignition key from ignition

1998 Honda Accord Ex 2.3 4 cyl. Ignition key stuck in the ignition will not turn all the way to last position to be removed, car starts no problem but only key available, and cant duplicate unless I remove it. Is there a pin stuck in the lock cylinder holding it in? I have tried moving the steering wheel, and transmission in the park or neutral position without any luck.

Thought I'd have a big bill if I took it to the dealer (new ignition switch, etc. etc.); sprayed oil into the lock, pulled the key out after a couple of wiggles. Thanks for the tip. I am positive you saved me a lot of money.

Well Thank you ssforest for the advice, I did exactly that you said, and worked, within 3 minutes I had that key out and lock cylinder working perfect.... Thank you for your advice seems that's the best fix for that problem.

My '97 Accord EX (2.3) had the black key stuck in it for over a year. I had to keep putting a towel over the steering wheel to disguise the fact. I read about the WD40 trick (I had already tried pushing the 'T' bar firmly into 'Park', wiggling the steering wheel, wiggling the key...etc. Two small squirts of WD 40 directly into the key slot and the key came out second try. I didn't even have to yank on it. Try it - it worked for me. Thanks a million to whoever it was that first suggested this 'trick'.

Wd 40 work like a charm my key wouldn't turn all the way off and then when I did turn it all the way off it wouldn't turn back on so I pulled the key out and sprayed it with WD-40 let it set for two minutes hate works like a brand new car

get some graphite lock lube. Also, you might have some wiggle room if it's not the valet key. The valet key has thicker edges which block it from entering the trunk and glove box.

There are many other solutions, depending on how much time you have, but start there if you just want the key out. If it's a copied key, the blades might be a bit rough so just keep wiggling the key with the steering wheel pulled and foot on the brake. Gently try to turn the key to the out position while pulling on the key a little bit. just don't force it, as it could twist the blades and make them lose alignment with the tumbler pins. if it's twisted, try un-twisting it.

I have a problem with the ignition.turning with the key in. I get the steering wheel unlocked but no further. Would I also spray in some lube ? How would I removed e the ignition all together if that is the problem.

I can't say how to remove the ignition, but first check that the key is original or a good cut copy first. If you get the wheel loose without forcing it, can you get in acc. mode? If it's an automatic, make sure it's in Park.

If you do mess with ignition, be very careful. There could be a high voltage starter wire if not relayed elsewhere.

I have same issue but it's due to my shifter coming off and a plastic piece that the button usually engages ,has come up out of it and try as I might will not go back in the same distance ,I know that it is some sort of electronic sensor due to the fact that when the battery is removed from the car the key will come right out any idea how to reassemble the internal components of my shifter?

I had the same problem as Sara above. If your shifter comes off, as mine did because the holding screw wiggled loose, make sure that the plastic piece in the handle aligns with metal pin in the shifter, otherwise your key will get stuck. The pin on the shifter has a sloped edge, this has to match the slope within the silver and black plastic piece for the shift button. When you have the orientation right, you won't have to push the shift knob down to apply the holding screw.

Yes as both Sara and premed handle came loose but in my car had stripped it down to change shift indicator light and a heavy cleaning .Btw shift bolt that secure handle are 3.65 each ,I lost metal rod at top somewhere along the way and found key will not come out of ignition either unless battery is disconnected, also found that after unbolting the 12mm 4 zinc bolts that hold base to car it released out ,going to dealer later on to find where it needs to set to release ,cause has anti theft and is in switch on left side of shifter .My 94 had a dead ignition spot where it would not let keyless start engage unless key was in ignition then and only then it would engage ,it was a faulty spring in it ! From being worn and a fresh dealer key used that caused it ,as opposed to worn og fyi!But it was just key wasn't black transponder key !
