Why won't it turn on?

I've read every blog as well as watched the very, very few videos with regards to this problem and yet the outcome is still the same....upset individual.

when you hold down the help key you can check the battery level indicated by the VU/battery meter located on the right side of your OP-1. the battery level is indicated by the LED array on the right side of your OP-1.all LEDs lit (including the red) indicates a fully charged battery good for around 16 hours of heavy use. The stand-by time is approximately 2 years.to recalibrate the battery meter please do the following: disconnect USB, turn your unit on and leave it on until it turns off by itself. do not manually turn off the unit. this could take up to 18 hours. the unit is off when the screen has turned black.after this, charge it fully using a computer or any standard USB charger. this can take about 2.5 - 6 hours depending on your situation. (the battery is 1800mA). this should recalibrate the battery indicator.

2nd type of instruction

Make sure the OP-1 is turned off.

Disconnect the USB cable and wait a few seconds. Important!

Connect OP-1 to a computer or charger using USB and leave it turned off for a few hours.

After this disconnect USB again and leave it turned off for about three seconds.

Finally reconnect the unit again. Does it charge now?

Try this a few times, and report back.

Nope, not even the above instructions worked. Never has it ever left the studio nor handled by anyone other than me. Please HELP ME Please.

Thanks everyone. I sent my over to Deltronics in Chicago and they brought it back to life. I have no idea why I got so flustered when I should have just sent it to them to begin with. Those guys rock over at Deltronics. Should you have a problem I highly suggest you contact them. Hope this helps.

Hello Martin,

It has been a while since you posted about your OP-1 not turning on. Hopefully you will read this message and be able to help me because I am experience the problem you had with my OP-1.

I was wondering if you know what the problem with your OP-1 was and if it has re-occurred since it was repaired by Deltronics. Also how much Deltronics charged you to fix it? I have contacted Deltronics and am considering sending it to them but would like to have an idea of what the cost may be before sending it to them. I hope you will be able to help me with these questions.

Thanks in advance for any help or information you may provide.

Cheers,

Igor

Hello Igor, I somehow got notified of your post because I was following this thread when it happened to me. This thing with the OP-1 not turning on has happened to me a couple of times. For me, I think it happens because I can leave it for some time unused. I don't know how that causes a problem, maybe it depletes the power to some sort of boot rom but I guess it doesn't matter how it happens, just that it happens and what you can do. What I have found is that I had to leave the unit plugged into a good power supply for maybe a couple of days, and then it would come back to life. As it happens so rarely, I think maybe people eventually discover this and then it doesn't happen to them again. Anyway, I do hope that works for you and, if it does, do please comment here and let others know. Best of luck! Robin

Hello Robin. Thank you so much for your reply. I have begun charging my OP-1 with a 2.4A USB charger since last night. I will leave it connected for the next couple of days and will report back here. Just a question - should I simply not attempt to turn it on for 2-3 days, then disconnect the USB cable, wait 3 seconds (as per the description on TE website) and try to turn it on? If it does not turn on the first time, should I plug it back in for another 2-3 days? Thanks for all your help. Really appreciate it.

Cheers,

Igor

hi Igor, It's been a while since it happened to me but I think I did have to plug it back in for another couple of days on one of these occasions and I was convinced I had a duff unit but it did come back to life again.... Good luck!

NO! Sorry. Just so irate while I sent a message to the support team and these idiots sent me the most stupid response EVER. I've explained to them in detail and yet their response would be "a repair of the unit is what you might need." No $@$*! Again, very few videos and even fewer suggestions to repair or where to get it repaired. Yes, I can go to ifixit yet I have no idea what the problem is to repair it on my own. Highly disappointed and would never buy from Teenage Engineering again. $900 paper weight is what I have now.

Thanks for the e-mail and sorry for the trouble.

Just to make sure, the problem you have is with the charging indicator or does the unit not charge at all?

If none of the guides doesn’t work, a repair of the unit is what you might need.

I'm not sure if others have had exactly the same problem but this has happened a couple of times now with mine. I suspect that not using for varying periods perhaps corrupts some sort of EEPROM and/or whatever media the os is stored on. In any case, the solution seems to be to charge the unit for a couple of days ( even though it appears foobared ) and then attach the usb cable to a computer. Turn on the OP1 while holding the com button ( second down from the top rhs ) and you should then find the OP1 entering a bios screen. From here you can select an option to flash the firmware. You can download the latest firmware from the TE website and follow the instructions on the OP1 screen to do the firmware upgrade.

I'm pretty sure this second time with mine I already had the latest firmware so it isn't a matter of just upgrading the os, it's reflashing/formatting/writing it completely.

There was a useful Redit thread about this too, as mentioned by Justin above.

It's a pretty nerve wracking experience having this happen, but there is every hope this will bring it back to life.

I will have to try some of these tips too, my op1 has been laying around for three years now. I can get it to run the Diagnostics and test which all run ok but it just won’t power up or allow me to do anything else. I too sent numerous mails to no avail. Just received the same same RMA request form mail for a Repair up north somewhere. Kinda gave up on it all together.

Most expensive paperweight ever.

Replacing the connector port fixed my issues:

After 6 years or so, my OP-1 pretty much required to be plugged in to work.

Then one day it stopped turning on all together. I was bummed.

It started acting strange over the last year - randomly turning on while the power switch was turned to the off position. Sometimes it wouldn’t turn on, other times it would.

I figured it was the battery but reading a couple other posts led me to believe it was the connector board. Totally worth the ~80$ to get it and it was super easy to install.

The microphone went out after a few years too, and since thats part of the connector board - it was fixed as well! Hurray!

This is for everyone who has had this problem….. I had this problem. For about 4 months I was confused as !&&*.

One day I decided I would bite the bullet and take a look inside. All that had happened is the flex connector had come loose inside the device, probably when I pulled out the usb. I clicked it back in place it worked.

Take a look at this link at how to access it.
