The "Unfortunately, Google Play services has stopped" error typically occurs when there's an issue with the Google Play services app, which is crucial for apps like the Google Play Store, Google services (authentication, syncing), and other core functionalities. If you're encountering this error during a software update and nothing is moving after the error, it could be due to a number of reasons, such as a corrupted cache, a problem with the update, or issues with Google Play services itself.
Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to fix the error:
Sometimes, the cache or data of Google Play Services may become corrupted, leading to errors like this.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Google Play Services.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear Cache and Clear Data.
- Restart your phone and check if the error persists.
Similar to Google Play Services, the Google Play Store can also encounter problems due to corrupted data.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Google Play Store.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear Cache and Clear Data.
- Restart your phone and check again.
Booting the device into Safe Mode disables third-party apps and can help isolate the issue. If Google Play services work fine in Safe Mode, it indicates that a third-party app may be causing the error.
- To boot into Safe Mode:
- Press and hold the Power button until the power options appear.
- Tap and hold Power off until you see the Reboot to Safe Mode option.
- Confirm the action, and the phone will reboot in Safe Mode.
- Once in Safe Mode, try updating the software again and see if the issue persists.
If the error doesn't appear in Safe Mode, try uninstalling any recently installed apps and check which one may be causing the issue.
Your Google Play Services may be outdated or encountering issues after the software update. Here's how to manually update it:
- Go to Settings > Apps > Google Play Services.
- Check the version number and make sure it's up to date.
- If an update is available, it will typically show up as an option. Alternatively, you can manually download the latest version of Google Play Services from a trusted source like APKMirror and install it.
If the device is stuck during a software update, it could be due to a glitch or incomplete installation. Try these steps:
- Go to Settings > Software Update (or System > Updates).
- Check for updates again and attempt to install any available updates.
- If the update fails again, consider using Recovery Mode to manually install the software update.
This can reset all app preferences (without losing any data), such as default apps, permissions, and settings for apps like Google Play Services.
- Go to Settings > Apps > More Options (three dots in the top right).
- Tap Reset app preferences.
- Confirm the action and restart your phone.
If none of the above steps work and the error continues to appear, you might want to perform a Factory Reset. This will erase all your data (so make sure to back up your important data first), but it will restore your phone to its default settings, which can help clear any system-level issues caused by the software update.
- Go to Settings > System > Reset > Factory data reset.
- Confirm the action and follow the prompts to reset your phone.
