iPad A1337 throws iTunes Error 2002

iPad (A1337) is stuck in Recovery Mode (forcing user to connect to iTunes).

When connecting to iTunes, this message pops when restoring to factory settings:

"The iPad could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (2002)."

We think it's either a bad battery or a bad 30-pin connector. Before we use invasive methods, we would like to drill down towards one root cause.

We can't connect to the Coconut Battery app to figure out battery health.

We will leave the iPad on a charger and see if it holds a charge. We can replicate this condition with different chargers, cables, and computers.

What else can we examine or perform before we go ordering parts. We're hoping for a bad battery. We're not in the mood for more surface-mount soldering.
