Can a "loose" battery be fixed?

MacBook 13" 2GHz Intel CoreDuo

I have had my macbook for about four years and for at least three of those it has shown an x in the battery icon unless i wiggled the battery into exactly the right position and held it there.

Not being a particularly techy type I had assumed the battery was loose and there wasn't really anything that could be done.

After my fiancee kindly introduced my macbook to the floor a number of times the hinge has snapped leading me to discover this intriguing website.

After reading all about how to replace the hinge I started thinking maybe I could completely fix-up the old girl and give her a new lease of life.

So can a battery become "loose"? Or is it likely something much more complicated like a loose wire inside that just so happens to be situated above the battery and connects when i wiggle the battery about?

Ultimately can it be fixed?

And before you mention it, I know three years is a long time to be putting up with a faulty laptop but I'm quite busy most of the time and the rest of the time I'm extraordinarily lazy.

Thanks all.

Will let you know how I get on fitting the new hinge and if I find anything glaringly obvious.

Is there a way to post photos on here? As I won't be able to describe the particular parts because I'm not exactly savvy with the insides of my MacBook.

Have just finished fitting the new hinge and the connector from the battery socket cable on to the logic board was loose enough that when i unscrewed the socket from the edge of the battery bay the connector just came away.

That seems to have sorted it but it didn't seem to fit very tightly when I put it back in.

Could this have been the culprit?

I think it was actually a loose connector on the logic board from the battery socket.

Also, when you have the battery out, look along both sides to see if there is any kind of bulge. Both sides should be completely flat, so if there's an outward curve, that's a problem. Bulging batteries are often responsible for being "loose" and not fitting correctly. You can generally take them in for replacement at an Apple store, because it's a defect that causes them to bulge.
