Planning on upgrading the motherboard from 8gb to 16gb on a Galaxy Samsung Tab 4. Will I need to install any software to make it work? Or do I just install and power up?

That is going to depend on where the replacement came from. if from another device you have, then it will have the software on it from that device.
If it is a new motherboard you may need to reload the firmware. Again, depends on where it came from.
I would be prepared for reloading the software anyway, as I would want to make sure I have the correct version for that device.
