I'd like to change my aging 1TB HD for an hybrid one 2 TB SSD Hybrid 3.5" Hard Drive but I can't figure out what's the brand of my actual HD. My iMac is a late 2009 27" it says here that matching brand is necessary 2 TB SSD Hybrid 3.5" Hard Drive or should the Seagate work properly anyway on my machine?

Here's what SATA system report gives :

Disque amovible : Non

Nom BSD : disk0

Vitesse de rotation : 7200

Type de carte de partition : GPT (Tableau de partition GUID)

Can you please advise? Where could I find such a hard drive in Europe?

Solução escolhida

You may have to look at the drive to determine the make.

Before you change the hard drive you will need to address the thermal sensor issue or you will have run away fans:

Here's the drive info: Seagate BarraCuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"

With the in-line sensor Mayer has pointed to, you can put in any 3.5" drive in.

Hi. Thanks for your answer. I've investigated some more and apparently ST in ST31000528AS stands for Seagate. So Seagate it is and 2 TB SSD Hybrid 3.5" Hard Drive would work fine.

I'd rather go for an SSD though. Would the Samsung 850 EVO 1TB be compatible? Does anyone recommend it for a late 2009 27" iMac 11,1. Can this thermal sensor be found in Europe?

I'd go for a bit slower SSD such as the Kingston SSDNow.

And to resolve the fan issue, you can download a fan controller app. I like this one: http://www.crystalidea.com/macs-fan-cont...

ANY 3.5" drive HD, SSHD or SSD will work in your system with the OWC in-line thermal sensor. You don't need to stick with Seagate if you don't want to. So, yes you can put in a Samsung SSD.

You may want to think about adding the SSD as a second drive Vs replacing your current HD, that is if your current HD is working. That way you could go with a cheaper option of a smaller SSD like a Samsung 750 EVO and using 12.7 mm SATA Optical Bay SATA Hard Drive Enclosure swapping out your optical drive. Then you can set it up as your boot and hold onto your HD for the deep storage it offers.

Thank you all for your answers!
