screen randomly goes black, then comes back?

my vizio tv is quite old. i would sat about 5 or maybe 6 years. its a 42 inch smart tv. its always worked great up until about 2 weeks ago i noticed that when i was playing PS4 the screen went black for maybe 2-3 seconds then came back on. in this time i could still hear the sound, but the picture went black. it only does it once in a while. so at this point its not a huge problem, but id like to repair it before it gets really bad.

does anyone know what causes this and what parts i would need to repair it?

I'll never buy another Vizio TV again, this is the second one I've bought goes out after 5 or 6 years. SMH

My 42" Vizio is now 2 years old. I use it as a combo YV, Computer monitor and ROKU streamer.

The screen went black and the TV restarted exactly one hour after I turned it on each day. I experimented; found if I left the electrical source ON all night, the effect did not occur. Mine is plugged into a battery-operated UPS, which I turn off each night.

A firmware update from Vizio installed early this month seems to have fixed the issue.

After opening up tv to inspect boards to check for blown capacitor(s), I do not see any. I put it back together and swapped the sound bar hdmi cable with the signal cable and problem went away. It could have been a faulty connection or an hdmi cable gone bad. TV now works

I have the same issue on my VISIO 50-inch, but it only does this at 7 PM like clockwork while watching DVDs. The screen goes black and comes back at exactly 7 PM like clockwork. I even updated the firmware completely, but it still does this.

This might not be a problem with the tv, it could be more or less the PlayStation or even the cable that you used causing the problem, I'd suggest starting with getting a new HDMI cable, if that seems not to work, then look at the teardown guide and make sure everything looks in place, and even look in the port, make sure there's nothing odd looking inside of it (TV and Playstation).

well i also have my desktop computer connected to the tv via HDMI cable. and i have noticed the problem while watching youtube on the computer as well.

Do you use the same HDMI Cable for both?

por

no i do not, i have separate cords and they are in different ports.

por

definitely a Problem with the TV, More then likely something wrong with the board/Ports themselves, This isn't my field of expertise, Phones and tablets are. I'll look around though!

Well I think I just fixed it. Mine was doing it badly and what I did was went into the picture settings and I turned the backlight off. Ever since I did that it hasn't done it. Your picture might not be as bright but it won't cut out anymore.

One of the responses to my complaint said the power board needs replacing. I have not yet looked how much the part would cost, but will before Monday. If the price is reasonable, I’ll replace it myself, unless the manyfacturer is willing to do it for free.

Update (01/05/2019)

I also got a procedure from Vizio via Text message:

“Let's try a power cycle.

-Power off and unplug the TV

-Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds

-Plug the power in

-Power on the TV”

I would say, search your TVs model number on eBay and look for a power supply board. Usually a power supply board is anywhere from $15-$30, and a main board could be $25-$50. Start there, after you've taken the TV apart to look for bad capacitors and generally just burnt places in the boards.

I found something that worked for me: These newer Samsungs demand that they are online. I have an Asus router which can be picky, and sometimes shuffles bandwidth around, especially the gaming routers. Not only that, but the Samsung TV has different sources and the Internet is one of them which the TV itself is trying to default to, which is in my opinion, buggy, software or firmware. Anyways, I manually blocked the Samsung from the network on the router side, and the TV no longer flickers to a black screen. Hope this helps.
