Exactly why is the function of the invertor and how does one know that a fault lies with the invertor

Ben's answer is partly wrong and partly right :)
the inverter is a circuit that converts DC direct current to AC alternating current necessary to drive the fluorescent backlight which lights up the LCD display
but as Ben mentioned, if it's only the inverter that has failed, you will still be able to see a faint image on the LCD in bright light or if you shine a light on the screen.
it's also possible that the backlight itself (fluorescent tube) has died - if you have a known good inverter you can test. here's an article I found on the subject.

If I understand it correctly, the inverter converts the AC power from your wall to DC in order to power the display backlight (update: I don't understand it correctly. See bac's response for the inner workings).
Regardless of the inner workings, it is responsible for backlight. If you have a black screen but can see faint images (especially when holding a flashlight at an angle to the screen), it's probably the inverter. If you have light but no picture, it's not the inverter.

I'm getting pixelation on my screen after my iMac stays on for a little while. Once its booted up the picture is good. Which makes me think that the LCD is working. But then after 15-20 minutes i start getting all these little dots and lines all over the screen.
Do you think it's the inverter or the LCD?
