USB port cover question

My port cover finally fell off. I rather like that it has - it's a hassle to open and close all the time anyway, but this leaves me with a question.

Is the port cover integral to the water resistance of this phone, or is it just a dust cover?

It is definitely needed for water resistance of the phone. As any conductive liquid contacting the charging port may cause water damage to the phone.
