I have a SCH-I435 I am no longer with Verizon and have not received any updates since Nov. 2014 . I have heard there is a upgrade from 4.4.2 into a 5.0 . I'm not very up to date on all the different terms. Can someone please give me step by step instructions . Also my phone has been rooted.

The easiest way is to borrow someone's Verizon SIM card and update it, then return the SIM card. Both AT&T and Verizon stop allowing updates once you leave their service.
An alternative is to find an offical ROM on XDA-Developer's website and flash it with their instructions using Samsung ODIN software.

Plug the phone into a computer and install the verizon software... you can update via computer with it, i use this on my note 3 that i use on tmobile

I think this is blocked if you don't have an active verizon account.
That is how I've upgraded multiple samsung galaxy Verizon branded devices, works for me most of the time but the update can take a a while to post to that service

I had a full sized SCH-I545 (S4). Either you tripped Knox and it won't let you update, or the Root you used disabled updates so you wouldn't brick your phone. What I did was I plugged it into my PC and used a ROM program to flash the stock rom back on. If that does not work, try using KIES (You might have to try 2 or 3 to see which works with your phone. Mine used KIES 2). It is the iTunes of SAMSUNG in a way.

Samsung has not released an official update to lollipop 5.0.
You can flash your phone to a custom ROM that is newer than what you have now. You can get 5.0 or newer via custom ROMs such as Cyanogenmod, AOKP, PAC rom. I will post steps in how to this later in 5 minutes.
Do you have ClockWorkMod Recovery installed? (CWM) You'll need a custom recovery to flash the Custom ROM.
Edit: After doing some searching. I couldn't find any Custom ROMs for this phone. I think you are stuck on 4.4.2.
