I have a PS3 that is about 6 yrs old. I don't game on it, just stream Netlix and stuff like that. The other day I turned it on and said to hook up controller via USB... well I've lost my controller because I only use the PS3 remote. From what I can tell by looking up it's put itself in safe mode. Is there anything I can do without a controller and why would it do that?

That will result in talking to Sony in a live chat with a Sony worker. Tell them your problem and they will get you a CONCLUSION.

You should be able to use a USB computer keyboard to have the system restart itself normally. How many times has it done this since you originally posted?
