Modem issue: wi-fi not working except for local

as long as my pppoe cable is pluged in i can go to web sites , when i unplug the pppoe cable i loose my connection , i have reset router many times , i have been assisted 5 times today spent 6hrs trying to resolve this problem . I have at&t high speed internet elite service , have done everything except to get another service provider , any suggestions
