Why is the lower half of my screen black with lines

I can read the top part of my screen but the lower half is black. What has happened? I have never dropped my kindle nor has it ever been out of it's cover.

Dear Clairetted,

Kindle's display is directly accessed from the front of the device. It means that there is no glass, foil, "skin" or any other kind of protection other than the cover you may use to keep it. I think that Amazon had done that in order to avoid interference with the display image that may have been caused by another layer of "protection", but, in this process, they made the display very fragile and prone to accidents.

If you carry it inside a backpack, purse, wallet or any kind of bag, maybe something inside it might have exerted some pressure on the display, broking it. When this happens, part of the display may present stripes or black areas, becoming unusable.

But before assuming that the display is broken, let us try to reboot your Kindle 2:

1) With your Kindle charged, slide and hold the power button for around 30 seconds and then release it..

2) Wait some 20 seconds more and your Kindle screen will begin flashing.

3) After this, wait until your Kindle reboots.

If after rebooting the image remains with lines and black areas, the solution will be the replacement of the display. You will need to send it to a service repair technician you trust, to repair it for you.

In case you want to try to repair it yourself, you may buy the replacement display searching for "Kindle 2 display" or "Kindle 2nd Generation display" on eBay or Ali Express. The display part number is ED060SC4(LF) and there is a Kindle 2 tear down guide here at iFixit, that you can use to help you disassemble your device.

Hope you may find this answer useful and manage to have your Kindle working again!

Best regards,

Miguel L. Martins
