Why does my device produce no sound from the speakers?

If your volume is on and you can't hear the device the problem might be with the speaker. The speaker might have a tear. Replacing the speaker and also making sure the wiring is properly attached should ensure that you hear sound. If the device rattles make sure the screws holding the speaker in place are not loose.
