I bought a iPod touch 4th gen that has a broken, non-functioning digitizer. So clearly I cannot turn it off the normal way, and holding the home button + lock button only does a hard reset. Is it smart to replace the lcd screen/digitizer while the iPod is on?
Do I have any option other than to wait for the full battery to die?

You could wait till the battery died, but if you have a way of grounding yourself you'd be fine.
