Seeking advice re Bluetooth replacement

I have a MBP Unibody 17" 2.66 GHz (Early 2009)

Before Mountain Lion, Bluetooth stopped working. These were the symptoms:

1.The icon in System Prefs disappeared

2. About this Mac>System Report>Hardware>Bluetooth shows: no information found.

Now I've initialised my HD and done a clean install of Mavericks. There is still no icon in Sys Prefs and still 'no info found' in Sys Report.

I've seen the excellent ifixit article-

MacBook Pro 17" Unibody Bluetooth Board Replacement

Using this, I opened up the machine and pulled out/reseated the connections to the Bluetooth board; on reassembling and rebooting, same symptoms.

So I'm about the order a new board, which seems to be the only way to go.

My question is: after replacing it, will the System automatically recognise the Bluetooth board (assuming there's no other problem) and Bluetooth icon return to Prefs?

The question is a little simplistic but am checking in case anyone has through experience any tips/tricks I might need to know.

Many thanks!

hummm. Just received the new Bluetooth module and fitted it.

On booting, no change in symptoms, i.e. no Bluetooth icon in sys prefs and 'no information found' in the 'hardware>bluetooth' section of sys report.

Opened up again and tried partially unplugging, then replugging/reseating the other end of the Bluetooth cable, nope, no difference.... Must this DIY repairer admit defeat? Thanks folks for any suggestions whatsoever.

Yes it should. Part of the POST (power on self-test) process is the computer "takes attendance" of the various bits of hardware - that's why if RAM repots missing (etc) you get beeps, or lights, and no boot. If it doesn't you have a connector or other bluetooth component fault.

Bluetooth is not deemed an essential pice of hardware (neither are optical drives) so your system will boot with one absent or problematic.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.
