Help with HD to SSD conversion. Can I keep both?

I want to keep 500 HD for pics and system info backup i think... And put in SSD not sure what size i need or good place or price to buy SSD Drive to make faster.. Its kinda slow? not sure why.

Can you send me same info you sent other guy or help with this mess of questions. Total beginer 1st apple?

i have an Apple MacBook Pro MD101LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop 500 HD upped the RAM from 4GB to 8GB RAM just added was easy. Tried to take batt out but two bottom right screws seemed striped or starting. I never touched them before or opened lid, so i left it and touched all metal before touching memory.. can i try and put faster SSD drive over optical drive? i seen they sell bay to put DVD drive in? not sure if poss in 13" model. I have used in 4months of having Mac used around 80gb says 419 free. Most are pics little part pie videos. i will need you to help for dummies!!

Do i need universal drive kit? only have small philips head.

Yes- what you want is this kit, or, something like it. If you get your kit elsewhere be sure to get the recommended tools (every job is easier when you use the proper tools).

You'll still need an SSD drive OWC has a variety - (you can also get a kit with their drives).

If you are using the SSD I'd use it to boot instead of back up (SSD's write speed is not as fast as their read speed so many use the SSD to boot, then write to the HD).

Size wise you could get anything up to your 500GB hd (for backup).

Study (not just read) the installation guide. Most DIYers have problems pulling the connectors off logic boards because they didn't unlock them, pulled the wrong direction, or didn't use a spudger under the edge of the connector.

Separate and mark all your screws so they go back in the right spots.
