Try reinstalling osx again, or replace HDD?

About a year ago my early 2008 iMac 2.4GHz 20" 1GB(upgraded to 2GB) 250GB machine started giving us issues after some power outages. It would freeze, or grey screen, or blue screen, and that was about it. I eventually erased the OS and reinstalled it. Have been using it almost a year since then, but it's never been quite "right". Yesterday it started doing it again. I ran the Apple Extended Hardware Test and got: Error code 4HDD/11/40000004: SATA (0,0)

Which I've found is a hard drive issue. Then I ran disk utility (which by the way, for MacHD, said "Mount Point: Not Mounted" if that matters) and it gave me "Invalid Record Count", "Volume Check Failed", and "Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed"

I'm not a big techie (that's why I own a Mac) so I don't speak alot of the lingo. Essentially, from this point would an erase and reinstall be worth it at all, or should I just go ahead and replace the HDD?

I did search around but couldn't find anything about when to give up... Great site by the way!

Thanks

At the end of it all I used the ifixit repair guide to install a new HDD. $30 = a brand new iMac.

Reformat the drive, then erase it and use the "write zeros" option. This will map out any bad blocks the drive may have developed. Then reinstall the system.

Thanks Mayer, I wiped and reinstalled (7 pass - 0). As soon as I finished the set-up, I went to Disk Utility and verified the disk, that came out all good. I then ran the Mac Extended Hardware scan from the install disk, that came back with the same Error code 4HDD/11/40000004: SATA (0,0)

The machine is running better than before, but I expect that might last anywhere from a day to a year.

Does this put me back to replacing the HDD?

You could try downloading SMART Utility (Google it) and see if it reports any problems in the attributes of the hard drive. You could also run the short and long tests The software isn't free but it does have a demo period where you can try it out.

Thanks Richard, I ran the SMART utility and it spat back "Overall SMART Status: FAILING". Went and picked up a replacement HDD today and now I'll see how well I can follow instructions.
