White Screen when awoken from sleep?

The iPod seems to have died just past it's warranty. I get the white screen of death after it goes to sleep. After a full re-install of the firmware the thing will work up until it falls asleep and dies. Now the apple people were very discriptive and told me it was some controller that was dead and needed replacing and quoted a 200$ for a fix. I would like to see if i can fix it myself for much cheaper. So does any one have an idea to which piece of hardware could be the culprit here?
