Solução escolhida

According to the ARK, they are socket compatible, have the same Intel HD, and same memory bandwidth and speed supports. As you are going from a higher TDP chip to a lower TDP chip, the cooling system wouldn't be an issue.

There is no reason the E3-1260L shouldn't work.

Really late to the game … but did anyone of you encounter the issue of the Xeon cpu not being recognised by the Apple > About > Specs?

Mine still show i5 but other apps that do cpu query shows the correct Xeon E3-1260L description.

Does it matter?

After the upgrade, my machine cannot wake up from sleep. Any issue with the macOS waking up the Xeon because it is not giving it the right opcode or something?

hello. Today, Your imac well functionning with the Xeon E3-1260L ?

por

Late reply ... yes, it does function except for sleep. Xeon chips are meant for servers and so does not do sleep at all. If you try to sleep, it simply freeze. So you need to disable sleep power management.

Other than that, works as per normal.

Hello, is your iMac ok with xeon today? Is it stable? I understand that sleep function does not work but can the iMac turn off the monitor when I don't want to use the computer? Or do I have to turn off that setting too? Thank you!!!

Hello! For anyone woundering onto this thread in 2021. Yes the Xeon 1260L will work plug and play with your 2011 IMac you will however lose sleep functions and I recommend turning this feature off since your Imac will freeze once it goes to sleep. Also in the ABOUT THIS MAC section of your imac in will read it as a I5 since xeons were not supported by Apple or Mac os for that matter. In my opinion this xeon chip is the best for the money especially if you have the 21.5 Imac with the lower 215w power supply. Alternatively if you want the best of the best specifically for the 21.5 the i7 2600S will out preform the xeon by about 15%. But current prices on ebay are around 100$ which to me is insane for how old the platform is.
