iPhone 6 Plus: touch screen intermittent, sometimes has white lines on picture

I just have to say right off that this is an odd one.

I've got a coworker that has an iPhone 6 Plus where the home button doesn't work at all and the digitizer will work if you beat on the phone or twist it.

Let that sink in a moment.... Yes, the phone is being twisted like you would ring out a dishrag: by holding each end in a hand and pushing on the ends in the opposite directions. Sometimes it will work if you bang the front of it against something else or press on the screen near where the front assembly connects to the board. When the phone is being mangled like that, the digitizer will kinda work; you can swipe to unlock, press icons, and so forth. When the phone is laying flat, touch doesn't work at all. I had to see it to believe it, and was downright horrified at the level of abuse being demonstrated.

This was about a month after the screen was replaced due to shattered glass.

Being a phone repair hobbyist, I knew that both the touch and the home button were connected in the same corner, and figured it was just loose cabling. Took it apart, and they were all snug in their sockets. No obvious damage to the sockets or the cabling. I put it back together, and still didn't work.

My coworker says she had taken it to where she had it repaired before and they tried 2 other screens but with the same results. Right up until I learned that information, I thought bad part. With the cost of a front assembly, I don't have one lying about to try testing with, either.

Given that the digitizer isn't working at all, I have no way of checking the front camera to see if that is also working or not (I've no intention of nearly snapping the phone in two to try).

Now I have no idea what is wrong with it. I've taken the motherboard out now, but I'm not seeing any cracks or loose soldering (though it could be something minuscule I'm overlooking). Ideas, please!

UPDATE:

I was able to finagle my way into testing the camera. It works fine....if you can get to it because of no touch.

From what I've found out from digging around the internet as well as some fiddling with the phone, this phone is an extreme example of the "white bar on the top of the display and touch screen not working".

A discussion on the Apple forums had a repair tech chime in.

The rep's screen name is "PatRichSua".

His first response on the issue is found at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/702...

The tech says as follows:

"Guys this seems related to the MOLEX LCD connection on the board, I just received 2 phones with the same issue, and this happen when you press the molex connection on the board, this is a level 3 and 4 support since is micro soldering and on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus is hard, I will do some test changing this port or checking the board on the microscope and let you know, but for sure is related for the connection, I tried 2 new screens and it happens when you press the connection on the board."

As well as...

"Posting an update, it was the molex connection (LCD) Connection on the screen, it was dirty, just make sure is properly connected or clean, if you have never opened your phone it may be disconnected when you drop it, so its causing interference. Let me know your results. I just clean that on the 2 6 plus phones and it worked properly =)"

Soooo, if you are lucky, you can just hose the connectors on the motherboard and on the LCD assembly with Electronic Cleaner(or rubbing alcohol (MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT GET THE FLUID ON THE LCD ITSELF OR YOU END UP WITH A WATER DAMAGED DISPLAY) and hope for the best.

If you are UNLUCKY, PatRichSua says here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/702...

"I just received 1 more phone related to the same issue, after perform some troubleshooting, I can confirm that this is related to the molex connection on the board since is just there when the issue happen when you pressed or move it, it's seems this part is sensible and Apple is aware of that, please note that this is not solved by changing the LCD, or Restore the phone, I know you believe that is a hardware issue too, but I can confirm that is related to the board, I will try to change this part and let you know the result, related to your question, if you are aware about how to open the phone and disamble the lcd on a safety way you you will see 4 connection from the LCD to the board, the small one in L is the one for the home button, the 3 in the same line are related on the following:

The first one you see before disconnect the LCD is related to the front camera, the second one ( the one in the middle of the 3) is the one cause this failure, even if you press the part with the phone turned on you will be able to reproduce the issue, I can recommend you to go to an Apple store and put your phone under warranty before to open it. Since even if you clean or adjust that part it will eventually fail and first if you don't have the training you will have the risk for a damage on the phone and second you will lose your warranty. So if there's nothing you can do or you don't have warranty anymore then yes you can go to a repair shop with a micro soldering experience on iPhone phones and replace that connection, however I need to first give a try changing this part to confirm that this solve the issue, but im like 90% sure that is related to that part, all the capacitors, chips, diodes are fine on the board.

Apple must do something about it since it seems a bunch of phone have or will have this issue in the next months."

In conclusion, if your phone is in warranty, get it replaced. If it isn't, then you either have a brick or you are finding a specialist that can do micro work.

iPhone 6 Plus: Pentalobe screw keeps spinning

One of the two pentalobe screws on my iPhone is just spinning around when I try to unscrew it. This is an urgent problem as my battery and lightning port are in the way out and I would like to replace them before anything else goes wrong. If anyone can answer this problem. One solution i have seen of is to drill out the screw with a 1/16 drill bit. Ideally I would preferred not to do that as I may cause serious damage to the phone.

Help plz

iPhone 6 Plus: Does iPhone 6+ LCD is replaceable?

Hello everyone.

Just little question, i've seen many peoples talking about changing the LCD of iPhone 6+ will make the home button stop working, and device will not open after for the error.

So, as you can see here, iPhone 6 Plus LCD and Digitizer Replacement

At the step 32, we have to peel the button flex (highlighted in red in the second picture), so does this "button flex" on the LCD are sticked to the LCD or sticked to the metal LCD shield ?

And does we can repair iPhone 6 Plus LCD without changing the original button, and make it work like a new, including touch id function?

Thanks

iPhone 6 Plus: Boot Loop After Screen Replacement

Just fixed my friend's iPhone 6 Plus. He said after a day of fixing it that it was doing strange things. It wouldn't charge past a certain percent and sometimes it'd shut off on him. Now the phone just does a straight boot loop over and over again with the Apple logo. Sometimes, when the phone isn't plugged in and just ran off of the battery while trying to start up, it gives a red screen of death, so I've heard, for just a flash of a second after the apple white background screen comes up. Then the phone just repeats, black, apple logo, red screen, black, etc. So I looked up answers on how to fix this problem because I like to look at other's before asking questions but I tried everything I saw and couldn't find the right solution. I tried changing the screen 4 different times. 3 times with new ones and 1 time with the old one. I used the same camera cable/mic/audio flex that he had on originally, also bought new ones to see if that was the issue. Disconnected the home button but the problem still presists. Disconnected both the home button and flex but the problem still happens. Put in another battery, problem still happens. I've tried basically everything I can think of, buying a bunch of new items just to test this phone and to get it to work. I put it in DFU mode, and recovery mode (both) and tried to restore with iTunes as well. It gives me error code 3194. I also have a broken iPhone 6s that gives me that error code as well after fixing the screen but I never seemed to get around to making a post on that. Either way, I have two broken phones that I really wish I could fix but I don't know how to. Mainly the iPhone 6 Plus I'd like to get working again if possible. Also if you want to help with the iPhone 6s, the problem occurred after I tried updating the phone and it turned off during the update process. That phone can only be turned on by doing a hard power on (home button + power button) but it also gives me a boot loop (no red screen). Hope you guys can help. I tried giving you all the information I could!

iPhone 6 Plus: Determining loose capacitors after water damage

I have a water damaged iPhone 6 plus logic board. I have shown below the NAND area of the logic board, and I have circled and labeled 5 capacitors that are burnt/loose. Does anybody know exactly which capacitors these are so I can buy replacement ones especially number 1? If anybody could tell me exactly what to look up at mouser.com that would be amazing.

If anybody can tell me what any of these capacitors are I would greatly appreciate it. Especially number 1 because it is so badly burnt. My iPhone will not start up/show in iTunes and I believe this is the reason why. I already have a micro-solderer who will put these on if I can figure out what capacitors they are.

Hello Old Turkey!! Thank you for replying, I really appreciate it! The number you are asking for is 820-3675 and the model is an Iphone 6 Plus. Not an Iphone 6s Plus. I have added three pictures for clarity on location on the board. I updated which parts I have "circled" and I only need three parts identified. Number 1 which I believe is a resistor, and numbers 2&3 which I believe are capacitors. Please let me know if there is anything else I should add in order to help.
iPhone 6 Plus: Sensors defective? Compass doesn't work.

Hello, I'm using an iPhone 6 Plus 64GB which I bought 2 Years ago. I installed iOS 10.0.1 and 10.0.2 recently.

As I recognized now, the tilting sensor doesn't work anymore. The compass needle is pointing to north and doesn't rotate. I can't even calibrate the compass. Playing games with tilt controlling doesn't work. It's possible that this is broken since few weeks, I didn't used it for weeks.

Sometimes it works for a few minutes after a reboot.

I tried resetting the phone completely, setup as new phone and tested the compass. It still shows the same problems.

GPS is working fine, as well rotating the screen. It got never any water damage at all. I dropped it about 1 year ago, but nothing was damaged after this except a bigger scratch at the corner.

Which sensor is affected? Gyroscope? Accelerometer? Magnetometer?

iPhone 6 Plus: My iPhone 6 Plus won't turn on. How can I extract data?

Hello,

I have an iPhone 6 Plus. It's almost 2 years old, and it's been suffering from "Touch Disease" for the last 4 months or so. 3 days ago, the screen turned red with vertical white lines, and then stopped functioning altogether. I could no longer turn on the phone. Every time I tried to charge the phone, it seemed as though nothing was happening. I opened it up and checked to see if the battery got disconnected, but it didn't. The screen itself wouldn't turn on either, and all the ribbon cables were connected. I tried connecting it to iTunes, but iTunes wouldn't detect it either. When I pressed the home and power buttons together, iTunes would sometimes pick it up, and Windows would make the sound it usually makes when external drives are plugged in, but the phone isn't actually accessible by the computer, or iTunes, and the computer doesn't recognize that something is plugged into the USB port. I checked device manager. iTunes partially sees the phone, and says that it needs to be restored or updated. It doesn't recognize it as my phone though, it just shows the serial number. I clicked update, but then errors 4005 and 4013 show up every now and then, and then it mentions that the phone can't be updated.

I took it to a repair shop, and we tested multiple screens and batteries on it, but it still wouldn't turn on. The people at the shop said that the motherboard likely burned out from Touch Disease.

I haven't backed it up in about 2 months, and there is a lot of data on there that I would need, including contacts, text messages, and notes. I don't think my phone automatically syncs to iCloud over the air, but I can't remember, and I haven't done a computer or iCloud backup via iTunes in about 2 months. Is there any chance that my phone automatically synced contacts, text messages, and notes since 2 months ago over the air? If not, is there any way for me to remove the hardware from my iPhone and manually extract the data using any sort of device?

I appreciate any help. Thank you so much in advance!

iPhone 6 Plus: How to remove a stripped screw without causing other damage?

So I finally got an iPhone 6 Plus, I opened it up to check it out.

During the disassembly I found a few QC issues, one stripped screw in particular. It's one of the screw for the battery connector bracket.

Upon close inspection, the screw seems to be tilted, not all the way into the screw boss and the screw head totally messed up. It won't turn at all, and it sits on an area very easily damaged by brute force. I fear I could ruin it further by attempting a removal, but if I plan to go to Apple to replace the battery, this would surely result in a whole device replacement, which is ridiculously expensive. I can't ask Apple to replace the phone now because it's not exactly a good idea to tell the genius that this phone has a stripped screw.

So guys please give some advices on how to remove this screw. I thank you guys in advance on behalf of some irresponsible guy at Foxconn.

Attached is the image of the stripped screw.
