Computer Will Not Power On
The device shows no signs of powering on and will not respond.
The AC adapter is broken
The AC Adapter is the black box on the charging cord. If broken, then the adapter is not delivering charge to the device’s battery. To test this, connect the adapter to a voltmeter and see if any voltage is being emitted. To complete this test, set the voltmeter to the voltage written on the AC adapter, then touch the positive lead to the charging pin inside the cord and the negative lead to the metal casing on the cord. See this page for details.
The battery is not functioning properly
See the section “Battery Won’t Charge” lower on this page.
The DC jack (charging port) is broken
The motherboard is unable to receive a charge from the AC Adapter. If this is the case, you must replace the DC Jack. Use this guide to replace the DC jack.
The motherboard has failed
Symptoms of a failed motherboard include physically damaged parts on the motherboard, an unusual burning odor, the computer randomly freezing, or the screen turning blue. If the laptop is showing any of these signs, the motherboard has likely failed and needs to be replaced. If you are unsure, many retailers can help to determine if a motherboard has failed. Use this guide to replace the motherboard.
Screen Is Black
Either the entire screen is black or only a portion of the display is black and not showing anything.
Computer software is not responding
Hard reset your laptop by holding the power button for 15 seconds. If that does not work, connect an external monitor to see if the display shows up. If the display does not show up on the external monitor, press F4 until the display shows up. If the display still does not show up on the external monitor, then the laptop display could be dysfunctional or the graphics card could need to be replaced.
The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) system needs to be reset
Turn off the computer and connect it to a power source. Then press and hold the windows key, the B key, and the power button for 1 second.
The memory modules are loose
Reseat (unplug then plug back in) the memory module contacts (there are multiple modules, so reseat the contacts for each). Or, try removing memory modules one by one to find the compromised memory module (power the laptop on with one memory module installed, repeat with all modules). If the first two methods listed above don’t work, replace all memory modules. How to access the memory modules.
The screen needs replacement
Use this guide to replace the screen.
Laptop Makes a Weird Noise or Overheats
Fans spin much faster or louder than normal, applications take longer to respond, Windows will not start/freezes, and/or the keyboard and mouse stop responding.
The laptop fans are compensating for excess heat
This excess heat is likely due to a large processing load. The following can help reduce the processing load.
- Try to make the computer run more efficiently by closing software that you are not using.
- Use the Windows Task Manager to make sure that applications you don’t need are not running in the background.
- Change the power settings to force the laptop to use less power. Power settings can be changed inside the Control Panel. Search “Power Options” in the search bar. Consider changing to power-saving mode. Also, click on “change advanced power settings” and decrease the sleep timer and hibernate timer to put less strain on the fans. Finally, inside of advanced power settings, click on “Processor power management” and expand “System cooling policy.” Then change the “On battery” policy to “passive” if it is set to “active.” Restart the computer to activate the new power settings.
The graphics driver is outdated
Perform a Windows update by searching “Settings” in the Windows Start menu. Then click on “Update and Security” and “Windows Update.” Install any new updates that may be available. Updating Windows should update the drivers.
The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is outdated
The BIOS is a system that manages the computer’s hardware. An update check for the BIOS system on this laptop is available here. Type in the laptop’s serial number when prompted and look for a BIOS update driver. If a driver exists, download it and follow the prompts to install it.
One of the vents is blocked
- Make sure that nothing is in the way of the vents. The user manual suggests not placing the laptop directly on your lap or setting it on a soft surface (i.e. a pillow) that may restrict airflow.
- If the vents have dust in them, clean them out with short bursts from a can of compressed air.
The fan is broken or is blocked inside
- The fan needs to be removed and cleaned. Use this guide to remove the fan.
- If the fan is so blocked that it still will not spin after being cleaned, then it needs to be replaced. Use this guide to replace the fan.
Speakers Are Not Working Properly
Speakers are producing muffled sound or are not working at all.
The audio driver is not working properly
- Check for Windows updates by searching “Windows Updates” in the search bar in the bottom left corner of the screen. Install any updates that might be available.
- If a Windows Update does not fix the problem, run the audio troubleshooter by right-clicking on the audio icon and selecting “Troubleshoot Audio.” Follow the prompts on the computer from there.
- If the problem persists, re-install the audio-drivers by opening the Device Manager under the Start Menu, double-clicking sound, then right-clicking audio drivers and clicking uninstall. Then restart the computer.
The speaker hardware is not functioning properly
Use this guide to replace the speakers.
Battery Won’t Charge
The computer’s battery is not receiving the necessary charge to power itself.
Non-compatible AC adapter
Make sure that you are using the AC adapter that came with the laptop. Using a separate charging cord may not charge the device.
Bent AC adapter pin
Within the adapter is a small pin. Should it become bent, power doesn't go into the laptop. To fix a bent pin, straighten it out with tweezers (unplug the cord before trying this fix, especially if you are using metal tweezers).
Broken wall outlet
If the AC adapter brick features an LED power indicator, check to see if the LED is lit to verify that the computer is receiving power from the wall outlet. If the LED does not turn on, try plugging the AC adapter into a different outlet to check the power source. If the LED is still not lit, you might need to replace the AC power adapter.
AC adapter cord is damaged
Feel along the length of the AC power cable and check for any kinks or breaks. Check the ends for any broken connections. Inspect the AC adapter brick. If it is discolored or warped, or if there are any problems with the power cord or connections, replace the AC adapter.
AC adapter will not deliver charge
Test the AC adapter using the UEFI Hardware Diagnostic tests to determine if the adapter is broken and whether or not you need a new one.
- Plug the power cord into the computer and wall outlet.
- Press and hold the power button until the computer shuts off.
- Turn the computer back on.
- Immediately press the [F2] key repeatedly until the HP PC Hardware Diagnostic UEFI screen appears.
- In the UEFI menu select Component tests.
- When prompted to select a test of the associated subsystem, select Power.
- In the Power Tests menu, select AC Adapter.
- Run the test and follow all on-screen instructions.
- When the test is finished the results will be displayed.
- If the test passed, there is no issue with the AC Adapter and you do not need to replace it.
- If the AC Adapter fails the test and the computer is still under warranty, contact HP with the failure ID code ready. If the computer is no longer under warranty you will need to order a new AC Adapter.
The device’s battery has failed
- Remove the computer battery and check to make sure all contact points are not damaged. Use this guide to remove the battery.
- Make sure there are no cords plugged into the computer.
- Insert the Battery.
- Plug the AC power cable into the computer and a wall outlet and allow it to charge for 15 - 20 minutes. (The Power LED should glow white when charging).
- Unplug the power AC power cable from the computer.
- Press the power button to start the computer.
- If the computer powers on, the battery is functioning. Test the battery using HP Hardware Diagnostics to evaluate the battery.
- If the computer does not power on, continue to the next step.
- If you have a secondary battery for your computer, insert that battery and troubleshoot the battery again.
- If the computer powers on properly with the secondary battery and runs properly, then replace the battery. Use this guide to replace the battery.
- If this problem remains with the new battery, you may need to replace the system board.
