Laptop Overheating
Your laptop feels hotter than normal and may suddenly shut down. It may also give you a notification saying that it is overheating. Your laptop may also emit an unpleasant burnt scent.
Dust or Other Substance Blocking Fan Vents
Your fan may not be able to operate properly if the vents are blocked by dust or some other substance. Check your vents to make sure that they are not blocked. Open your device and clean the vents using a compressed air duster or other dust-removing devices.
Inadequate Thermal Paste
The current thermal paste may not be applied optimally, or its efficiency could have deteriorated if it has been a few years. You will need to open your device. Note that you will need to reapply thermal paste if you decide to remove the cooler to check. Follow the link here to remove the fan and find the thermal paste.
Fan Not Starting Properly
It’s possible that you may need to replace your fan. The process of doing so is easier than you may think. Here is a step-by-step guide for replacing your fan.
Touch Screen Distorted or Not Registering Touch
Your screen may have color disfigurations or may not properly register touch controls.
Simple Software Issue
Sometimes, your screen may have sudden discolorations that were caused by a software issue. If you experience this, first try and completely shut down your computer. Once your computer has been shut down, try turning it back on and see if the problem has been solved. If this solves the issue, check the software that you were using when the issue occurred to see if it has any new updates. These updates may fix the bug that you experienced.
Out of Date Graphics Drivers
You may find initially that your screen may appear to display lower quality output than expected. You may want to check the manufacturer’s site for updated drivers. If there are still issues, there may be newer graphics drivers available than those provided by the manufacturer. You may want to check the vendor’s site for updated drivers. In this case, this would be Intel.
Broken Screen
As a last resort, you may need to replace the screen entirely. We’ll take you through the process of doing so.
Computer Not Powering on or Dying Quickly
Your computer may either run out of power very quickly, fail to charge, charge slowly, or not power on at all.
Excessive Background Tasks
If you don’t routinely close background software or close tabs, it’s possible that your computer is being overworked. Consult the Task Manager to see how many tasks are being run on your laptop and end any unnecessary ones. Additionally, check your browser to see how many tabs you have open and close any you don’t need.
Broken Computer Charger
If your computer doesn’t appear to be charging properly, the issue could potentially be with your charger. When you are able to, first try charging your laptop from a different outlet. If your laptop still does not appear to be charging, the next cheapest potential solution would be to purchase a new charger.
Faulty Battery
If any of the above does not solve your problem, you may need to replace the battery. It is a good indication that this may be the case if your laptop has been through extensive use. In order to do so, you will need to follow our guide to replace the battery.
Low Storage or Memory Warnings
Your computer may be running out of storage or memory. You may receive a notification if you are running low on either. Your computer may also be unstable if either storage or memory is damaged.
Unnecessary Files Not Deleted
If you don’t routinely delete unused files, storage may fill up very fast. You will want to remove files you don’t need anymore. You may also want to use the Disk Cleanup Tool since old Windows updates may use up a lot of space.
Software Not Being Closed
If your computer is running out of memory, it could be because the memory is being overwhelmed with background tasks. Open your task manager to see what software is running on your laptop and close any unnecessary ones.
Malfunctioning Memory
The reason your laptop might be crashing or running out of memory frequently could be due to the memory malfunctioning. Replacing the memory in the laptop would be the suggested solution to this. Follow this step-by-step guide to see how to replace the memory in your laptop.
Full or Damaged Hard Drive
If you are unable to create enough storage space on your computer, you may need to upgrade your hard drive. First, back up the files that you want to keep to either a cloud service or another storage device. Then, use this guide to replace your hard drive with the upgraded one.
Speakers Silent or Output Distorted Sound
Your sound may either sound corrupted or not play at all.
Computer Sending Sound to Wrong Output
Before attempting to repair or replace your speakers, it is best to first check whether your software is set up correctly. Your computer may be attempting to connect to some external audio device and is therefore not correctly sending sound to your main speakers. Turn on your computer and click on the audio icon in the bottom right corner of the screen. Make sure that the specified speakers listed are the ones that you are attempting to use. If they are not, use the dropdown menu and switch to your desired output device. Then test your sound again.
Software Error
If your sound output is still not working correctly, you may need to shut down your computer. Once your computer has been shut down, try turning it back on and see if the problem has been solved. If this solves the issue, it may have been a simple software error. If the sound is able to run on one application and not another, then the software that it is not running on may need to be updated or reinstalled.
Out of Date Drivers
Sometimes an update to the operating system will cause the audio drivers to malfunction. The best solution to this is to update your audio drivers. You could also try uninstalling and reinstalling these drivers if the drivers are already up to date.
Faulty Speakers
If your sound is still not working properly, you may need to replace your speakers.
