Thank you for all the replies. I've caved and decided to pay the $149 to have Sony fix it/send me a refurbished one. Which means I will now have the same amount of money invested as if I had just bought new in the first place. Stupid mistake on my part for buying without trying, but lesson learned. Thanks again to those of you who so kindly replied.
