Hi alanmk, I had the same issue on the same macbook air bought in December 2012. Exactly one year ago the fan of my Macbook air started to speed up just before Mavericks boot, so I tried: 1. Update to Yosemite, not solved 2. Update to El Capitan, not solved 3. I brought the laptop to Apple support and after paying 50€ the guy told me that I have to replace the motherboard, for a lovely price: 650€. So I refused and keep trying to solve by myself. 4. Tried SMC and PRAM reset, not solved. 5. In january I installed a Linux Distro on the Macbook Air, not solved again. 6. After a while a realised that the problem was in the Mac firmware: the minimum speed for fan was 6500rpm, which is also the maximum!! So I installed a simple fan controller: https://github.com/dgraziotin/mbpfan and solved the problem. I suggest you to simply try something like https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23049/... for OSx.
