Difficult

Meu Problema

I was having fun trying to "platinum" GT5, Playstation overheating and fan blowing full speed. I always found it strange that it could be so loud and would go off so often. 2 hours after starting the system, my PS3(40 gig modified with a 350 sata hard drive) froze. So far nothing out of the ordinary, it happens, but this time it was bad... I waited several minutes and booted it back up, and... Bam! The dreaded YLOD appeared. I had heard stories, but my 4 years old console never did it to me during that time so I figured I was safe... I was so wrong...

I knew Ifixit.com, but never really had to use it before. My first reflex of course was to go there and check, first of all if it was indeed a YLOD due to overheating or something else, and second of all because my console isn't under warranty anymore due to its age and I wasn't even in my country(France) where I originally bought it. I had some of the tools needed for the repair at hand but I was missing the thermal paste and a hair dryer or hot air blower. Only visiting Canada(the country where I was at that time) I didn't know who or where to go to in order to buy all that, so I figured I would just order the full repair kit on Ifixit. And let me tell you that I was pleasantly surprised by the professional and friendly service I got from the Ifixit team! Initially I couldn't order the full kit with the hot air blower because it is reserved for US only. I emailed the Ifixit team and they offered me a workaround even though it wasn't supposed to be done that way. Every answers I got from them came quick and were spot on! And I received my package faster than I thought! Bravo and as we say in France "Chapeau bien bas!"(I tip my hat off to you guys).

Minha Solução

The repair went smoothly, though I had to use another tear down guide (by Gilksy) for my model as the one on Ifixit is for the 60gig Ps2 retro compatible PS3. it can be found @ http://youtu.be/Z6qRLytwykE. I took my time, followed all the instructions and took the time to clean up the inside of the console(it was a mess... So much DUST!!!), and when I reassembled it and fired it up... Boom! YLOD was gone! and my console was quieter as well!

Meu Conselho

My advice is to take your time, it looks intimidating at first glance but really if you follow the instructions and use common sense(the same as if you opened your PC to replace a motherboard or a microprocessor), there is no reason things should go wrong. Stay organised and keep track of your screws(there are a lot of them), and again take your time! No rush! It will be worth it!
