Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death Fix Kit

After many years of having my 360 be nice and stable (my replacement unit after gettting the RRoD the first time), the replacement finally gave up the ghost and would no longer power up.

I had a few issues with the pin clips in the back of the case. My biggest mistake here was thinking I could do it without the special case tool. Once I got that, then everything was great. (I did get the tool, but I tried opening the case before I got it)

And then I figured while I was at it, might as well swap the case out, so I picked up a sweet glow in the dark case from XCM.

My step-daughter's Xbox 360 succumbed to the dreaded Red Ring of Death shortly before Christmas. Not only was this a bummer for her, because she uses it a fair bit, but we had already bought her some new games for Christmas.

It went exactly as described. The videos and instructions were spot on! The tools and parts all worked perfectly, except as follows: There was one hiccup where the hex-drive function of the screwdriver was not the right size to remove the heat-sink posts on our unit. Not a big deal though as I own other tools to accomplish that task. I took the unit apart one evening, and heat-flowed it, replaced parts, and re-assembled the following evening.

My repair worked perfectly the first time. I did do the "optional" heating of the motherboard with a heat gun to re-flow the solder. I don't know if the repair would have been successful or not without it, as I didn't try without first. Heat guns are not expensive and have many uses, so just go out and get one. Don't be afraid to do this step. I used the stop-watch app on my phone to time the heating and followed the instructions in the repair guide to the letter.

As for the overall process, just take your time, study the pictures carefully and you should have no problems. It was SO worth it to see the smiles on my partner and daughter's faces when I pushed the power button and it fired right up. I'm told it works better than ever now.

The repair went smooth! There were no hiccups at all! I had the Xbox taken apart in front of me while my girlfriend was playing her favorite show (Smallville) and I was able to finish fixing the Xbox and still watch tv at the same time! Piece of cake!

My Xbox 360 elite finally succumbed to the Red ring of Death. After being in storage for several years my six year old started to enjoy some of my old games. But then one night it received the ill fated Red Ring of Death.

At first I tried to follow the video but I had to supplement that with the repair guide website. After following all the instructions to a T I plugged my Xbox back together and wham! Red ring of death. I did not do the “burn in “. Which was recommended mainly because I totally didn’t read that step. I did see it later after putting the whole thing back together again. So I decided to just run my Xbox with its RRoD all night long. I came down the next morning like I was 5 about to open Christmas presents. Turned off the Xbox and cycled it back up and low and behold it turned on. I was very proud of myself and thankful to your company. Awesome work.

My Xbox 360 Elite (Original not Slim) had been Red Ringed for YEARS, and Destiny 2 was coming out soon and I hadn't played the expansions I bought for the first one yet. I also didn't even think to check out iFixit (even though I knew about them for years) until recently just out of curiosity. There were a few sets left at the time, so I figured to give it a go. I also wanted to potentially sell my 360 when Project Scorpio came out (or in general), even though it's only $20 bucks credit at GameStop.

The Repair was incredibly frustrating for me, but my case is unique. Quite literally, my case on my 360 was damaged from trying to open it prior without the appropriate tools, so with broken/missing clips, it made the removal of the case incredibly difficult (arguably the hardest part for me). I completed everything except the heat sink posts and put it back together. I didn't reflow the motherboard, nor attach the heat sinks the first time because I didn't have a heat gun, and the tool they provided to remove the bolts on the heatsink wasn't strong enough. After putting the console back together, I received another RRoD error code (one undefinable when searching online).

so I took it apart again, reattached the heatsink (again with the old posts), new thermal paste again, and put it all back together....Same issue. So, after a few days of frustratingly taking my console apart (breaking the case more and more everytime) I decided to finally invest and get an adjustable wrench, and a minature blowtorch (with a heat gun add-on). I reflowed the motherboard (of okay quality (messed up once, but no real damage)) and tried my hand at the heat sink posts again. The wrench was able to successfully remove the heatsink posts, and I was on my way....until...

The new heatsink posts somehow needed to put 8 washers (2x4) on top of the 4 screws which are inserted into the motherboard before placing the heatsink onto those screws. If that sounds confusing and/or difficult, you're right. I got so much thermal compound on me from trying to put that together, and failing multiple times. It could've gone easier if I had another person with me. But, after many trials and tribulations, I got both heatsinks on with the new posts. I put back together the console and angrily connected everything, saying "IF THIS DOESN'T WORK, I'm F*ING DONE"...and VOILA!!! IT WORKED! AFTER 3 YEARS! FINALLY WORKED! Got Network Settings, Xbox Live, and Destiny (with SO many updates) up and running almost no problem!

The provided heat sink posts are IMPORTANT. Every step they give you is important. Don't skip out on anything. If you need additional tools, then get them, because it will work. Even if some steps can be a lot more difficult than others (which isn't necessarily described nor shown in the manual.)

The hardest part for me was getting the case off; the clips above the power cable took me forever to get apart. Everything else was pretty easy and the guide from iFixit was extremely helpful. I also reflowed the motherboard and I think it helped. My XBOX works great now!

The only thing the guide here does not show is testing after applying the thermal paste and putting the GPU and CPU back on. rrod360.com has a guide similar to iFixit, but includes testing the XBOX to make sure the thermal paste works.

Helping a buddy clean out a house I came across a 5yr old Xbox360. I asked him if he wanted it and he said I was welcome to it. After straightening out the USB port she fired right up. With the aid of some YouTube videos I opened it up and cleaned out the enormous amount of dust. It ran with no problems for a year or so but inevitably developed the RRoD as these consoles are wont to do. With the unyielding need to fix things being what it is I began looking for any and all information on how to properly repair my lucky find. After an exhaustive search including hrs of YouTube videos and countless websites I settled on the kit from iFixit. It was affordable and ostensibly well thought out and the website has a thorough step by step guide. Also Spider-Man's girlfriend has a great 4min video that makes the process pleasing to the eye and easy.

The kit and guide are truly excellent. I dig fixing things but I'm far from an expert. The guide made everything clear and simple. It includes accurate pics for each step and even gives warnings to pay close attention when there's the potential to damage delicate parts. Everything fit perfectly with no modifications required. The whole process took less than 2hrs working very methodically. A wiz could breeze through it in less than 1. After installation I got all green lights. Watching a few movies and playing a game totalling 5hrs now we're still good to go.

As this kit addresses the real cause of the red lights I think if your Xbox360 wasn't tampered with that this kit and guide will do the trick.

This kit is likely the best way to prevent the RRoD as stated on the website.

On the step where you replace the heatsinks it might help to hold the screws in place with tape so they don't fall out before you actually screw them in. Just echoing a tip I saw elsewhere.

My xbox 360 One starting have the "Red Ring of Death". I had tried the simple solutions of cleaning out the fans, etc., but, after checking around the internet, I found iFixIt and the description of my exact problem. Since I was well passed the warranty period, and Microsoft no longer would support repair, I figured I would give it a try after watching the iFixIt video of the repair.

The repair took me about an hour. The step by step instructions by iFixIt were invaluable in leading me step-by-step through the repair. There was just one point where I had to look at the video to be sure how to remove the motherboard without damaging. To put it all back together, I literally followed the steps in reverse. Of course, the big test was when I plugged it in. It worked and is working just fine. An inexpensive fix give new life to a good system.
