Can you disable the proximity sensor, Moto X?

Is there a way do do this? I know there are factory codes you can type in on other Motorola phones that will allow you to do this.

The story behind it is that we have a phone a coworker replaced the screen on and now the prox engages immediately on every call and wont turn off. This is happening with both the old and new glass now. Checked components of the board under a scope and all looks clear. So not sure what els to do.

I believe the issue may be what I've experienced twice myself. If you look at the photos https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/ig... and https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/ig... you will see the black gasket piece that sits over the top of the these 2 sensors. While in image https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/ig... (which sadly is the condition both of mine managed to get reassembled in) the piece is missing. In one instance I held myself entirely accountable for the mistake and purchased the client a slightly used but never opened phone of the same model. During comparison of them I found this part, placed it on the clients original phone and the issue was 100% resolved. My question is, does anyone know where we can find just this piece as I have a very kind and patient lady awaiting my resolution to this same issue?

por

Is that piece made of black rubber? If so, then I lost track of that piece during a screen replacement. Now the phone's proximity sensor has failed low, even though the IR led and light sensor are still working. I'd also like to know if replacement parts can be had, or if proximity-related features can be disabled, using a factory code, or otherwise.

Has anyone found a way to fix this issue or substitute the missing rubber gasket? i have the same issue and can't find a working app to disable the proximity sensor.

Yes, I did. Get a black/two sided tape and cut it about 1mm wide(http://www.lowes.com/pd_394705-98-414/DC...). Proximity sensor is consisted of an emitor(round white plastic housed LED) and detector(square grey photo transistor). Make two-layer(due to thickness of the tape) "8" pattern(more like font 8 used in digital clock) around emitter and detector. You need a tweezer and lighted magnifying lens to do this as the proximity sensor is very small. You need to be a bit of handy person as well.

Yes, it worked. The proximity sensor reading was 3.0, inch I think, fixed without it, but it now varies from 1 to 100(use Proximity Sensor Test app) with this 3M tape fix.

Thanks for the great idea. I cut the same small figure 8 pattern out of rubber from a bike tire and placed it over the sensors. Now my phone works perfectly!

In the Market Place there are several apps that allow you to control the proximity sensor. I would play around with a few of those apps. Its not a legitimate fix, but it gets the job done!

Look for Version 2.0 or higher of Proximity Sensor and Screen by Steven Stanley Bayes.

Does not require neither root access nor any third party frames nor products. Tested with MotoE XT1023. Should work with all or most Android devices.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/detai...

OR

Go to Google Play Store with your device. Click " APPS ". Click the magnifying glass of

the search. Type exactly, character by character, :

Proximity Sensor and Screen by Steven Stanley Bayes

***************************************************************

PLEASE, NOTE : MUST BE TYPED EXACTLY AS SHOWN, EXACTLY AT THE " APPS " TAB OF GOOGLE

PLAY STORE, BECAUSE THE SEARCH ENGINE OF GOOGLE PLAY STORE IS VERY SENSITIVE.

Click on the displayed app with the same name and author to download and install. The

application is also available in many other app stores and online which may or may not

show after a general purpose search with google.com and a web browser but some forums

where the links are posted may show.

READ THE INFORMATION INSIDE THE APPLICATION FIRST.

What if I told you all you need is some duct tape and tape the sensor then he in your call wait awhile your screen will turn off at first then hit the power button once then there you go! You're free. And all you need is duct tape or some other sticky non-see through material.

If you don't know where the sensors are they should be that 2 unoticable dots on your phone to the left. (First Gen Moto X)

Take a rubber sensor gasket off an older gen Moto Droid Model. You can modify if you see fit. This is the best thing I have personally found that works as buying a replacement Moto X can be pricey as you will have much difficulty trying to find JUST the rubber gasket piece. Even if you purchase a moto droid Razr from a few years ago for $20 and jsut harvest the rubber gasket out it will work and save you $$$.

I had the same problem. My screen broke so i have been trying to replace. The glass on the proximity sensor fell off and then the it stopped working. So i thought that the proximity sensor was dirty or broken and it wouldnt work. So i found out that the problem was because of the rubber plastic that surrounded the proximity sensor. So i cut a rubber piece of a ear plugs and cut a tiny little hole around it to place it right around the sensor. And immediately it startes to work. It was a very thin slice of rubber. I use the ear pieces of rubber of one that i wasnt using it and it worked.

Glad you have fixed your problem.

You can still use https://play.google.com/store/apps/detai... just to monitor ( in the notifications ) whether your sensor responds correctly after the fix.

Version 3.0 :

https://play.google.com/store/apps/detai...

Version 3.0 allows to really or virtually disable the proximity sensor while in calls, made and received and to re enable at will with a click of a button and without restarts. This application does not require any third party software in general. However, only one menu selection, which really disallows the proximity sensor when in calls, made or received, requires XDA Framework and Xposed Installer and Xposed Jar. The application will work without these too.
