    • Remove the airpath grille from the side of the motor compartment by pulling out and away from the attached area.

I can't complete this step; the airpath grille is under a panel. I'm not able to remove this panel, maybe I'm missing something?

    Michelle Garcia - Responder

same here did you miss a step in removing the airpath grill cover

    m_sabr - Responder

The same here! I cannot remove the air path grille because of covering. How do I, (we) remove covering. It doesn't just come off.

    • Remove the motor compartment panel by lifting up and away from the device.

The trick to removing this motor compartment panel: Wiggle it loose first. Then get an index and middle finger under the FRONT-LEFT L-shaped section of the panel (to the left of the screw hole, behind the spring mechanism). PULL STRAIGHT UP. You are going to likely get uncomfortable with the amount of pressure this requires and you might think you will break it. Keep working at it. Index and middle finger lifting it straight up. When it comes up, the spring mechanism might fall off. It's okay. You didn't break it. The motor compartment panel will pop off (up) eventually.

Thank you for responding! Is this what you mean? I can lift the left side a bit, but the right side near the black motor vent is not budging.

I took a photo but I can't figure out how to insert it in replies.

These instructions were fantastic accept for one section. On Step 9 you never mention to first remove the Motor Compartment Panel before removing the airpath grille. The picture just shows the panel already removed. Otherwise, I followed the directions forwards and backwards and I was successful!! I went to the local vacuum repair store to purchase a new belt. They did not have the Shark belt so I purchased the Bissell BIBL, BELT geared 80R4, 47A2 for $3.50 and it worked perfectly!!

is the Shark 400 and 401 the same in changing the dive belt?

What is the replacement belt part#? Did I miss that somewhere here? I can’t find it on their web site or anywhere else on line using the AH401 model #, thanks

Mark Pugliese - Responder

I have an AH452 and the belt number is 4315 SC or Gates # 192-3GT6-SAR

Walt Shuler -

Also, my model requires the TR drivers (security torx drivers with hole in the middle) which isn’t clear in this instruction

Great step-by-step instructions. I thought the belt was broken on my Model AH401 but when I finally got to to the drive mechanism, I discovered that the metal brush roller axel had broken away from the white plastic gear (shown in pics 15 and 16). It looks like the gear was just epoxied to the axel bolt head.

My unit also needed security torx drivers to remove all of the torx screws.

I found the same problem, along with tearing my hair out. 😱

Do you know where I could find a belt for the Powerhead? I know its an old vacuum, but there must be similar vacuums that use this size belt. Thank you.

William P - Responder

To nm1hart, I cannot for the life of me find the hidden screw you are referring to. I can wedge up the panel a little on the left of the handle, but not on the right side near the motor. Something is holding it down, but I can't find the screw. Thank you for any help!

Susang - Responder

I followed this to a tee and it worked. The only sad part to it is when i got toward the end i quickly found out that the belt was intact but my motor was frozen internally. Locked up!!! not worth replacing in that case through all away :)

gianstafan291 - Responder

Could you explain how to get the motor compartment panel off. Another poster said there is a hidden screw, but I can't find it. Thanks!

Susang -

I finally found the screw to remove the panel that holds down the the motor cover. It is actually in back of, and underneath, (but behind), the motor cover. Unfortunately words don't describe it accurately. It is really too bad that Ifixit doesn't allow commenters to post a picture in this reply box. That would make all the difference in the world. Also, I'm putting a curse on Shark! They really put a lot of time and effort into creating an almost impenetrable Chinese box. I've probably ruined the vacuum. Sadly, I really loved this vacuum, which is why I bothered to bother...The belt is not broken, just loose, and it looks like the white gear wheel is broken from the metal post that turns the beater brush. Oh well.
