    • Warm up an iOpener following the instructions found in the iOpener guide.

    • Place the warm iOpener on top of the edges of the screen. This heat will weaken the strength of the adhesive between the display and body.

no, I didn't break the screen upon removing batteries.

    • Use iFixit opening picks to wedge under the edge of the screen at the speaker port.

    • This may take significant force. A fingernail might work better for the initial lift

    • If you push straight down near the edge you will go through the speaker mesh and possibly end up damaging your speaker; try to push the pick in at a shallow angle.

    • Carefully try to work your way around the device using the picks, reapplications of the heated iOpener, and luck.

    • If you break the glass on one side you might want to try again starting from the other side so that you have a clean, unbroken, edge on that side.

    • While the glass on this display is not particularly sharp when broken, it is still broken glass and you should be careful with it.

Be very careful on the top edge where the front-facing camera is. The antenna’s for all wireless components are pressed into the adhesive on both the right and left of the camera. I tore off a piece of my wifi antenna here.

    • Flip the display over so that parts underneath it are easily accessible.

    • Do not pull out the display as it is still attached to the motherboard.

    • If you are replacing the display, or want it out of the way, continue with the display replacement guide steps.

Please note that the WIFI antenna can become stuck to the display. It is located on the black plastic to the right of the camera and can be easily disconnected accidentally. Excellent guide otherwise.

I second this comment. Didn’t know it was there. The surface 3 pro guide clearly warns of this in the takeapart.

    • The RF shield that you are about to remove will be damaged in the process. you may be able to bend it back into shape once you remove it.

    • Locate the point where the display is still attached to the motherboard.

    • Use a flat spudger to pry off the RF shielding/bracket retainer.

    • Use a thin guitar pick to release the snap pin from the display to the motherboard.

    • The little black piece (the latch for the ZIF connector) that you have just flipped up is no longer held in place by anything due to Microsoft trying to make the device slimmer. It will fall out and be lost for all eternity unless you carefully keep track of it.

Don’t use your spudger like in the picture unless you want to destroy the ribbon cable socket.

    Bryan Engelmann - Responder

    Then what should you use?

    patrickwalley - Responder

A spudger worked fine for me. As long as you’re careful you should be fine.

What I did mess up though was the wifi antenna. I was extra extra careful when working on this area but I still managed to break the wifi cable due to the fact that the screen has copious amounts of glue / sticky tape stuck to the top of it which makes it near impossible to remove the screen without causing damage - Way to go Microsoft! >:(

    Clems - Responder

Noob here. How do you get a new replacement screen back on? Press and pressure onto the existing adhesive?

    Robin Tan - Responder

If you loose the little black piece (the latch for the ZIF connector) :-( Where can you buy a new one?

    Gordon Lenihan - Responder

The RF cable shield can be taken out. It is only clipped on the sides. If you careful enough to take it out, it will not be deformed or you formed it back in place as you want.

You may not want also to installed it back (i did mine without the shield) Putting a kapton tape or any tape in the ZIF connector will do the job.

It is more risky breaking the ZIF lock if you poke it with a pick while the shield is installed.

But, then again it will be your choice. Goodluck.

    Jojo - Responder

Decimated the zif connector, completely broke off the locking clip. Looking for ways to attach the ribbon securely so it makes contact with the pins and stays put. I put thin double sided adhesive to hold it down, then sponge adhesive to the shield and clipped that back down, but the unit still won’t turn on.

ALSO when I try to put the ribbon back on, the unit will buzz a moment telling me it’s live! Is there any way to disconnect the power without removing the battery while I work on this??

How do I put the zif connector back on

    Michael Hernandez - Responder

I keep my fingers crossed. It is the worst LCD connector ever :( I broke my zif.

Where can you get replacement screens from?

Gareth - Responder

They sell them on this website

Saul Rocha -

is the adhesive that is needed available on this site?

What would happen if that little RF shielding part was not reinstalled?

meric robb - Responder

The RF shield both helps prevent the closely packed together components from interfering with each other and also holds in the ZIF connector latch (the little black piece that I warn you not to lose) for the display cable. The results could vary between screen flickering with inconsistent touchscreen performance and the display cable possibly coming lose inside the device and needing to open it up and reattach it. I didn't find it too difficult to bend the RF shield back on, but you may have a harder or easier time.

I was involved in a motorcycle accident and my screen was completely cracked. There is also damage to the strip at the bottom where the keyboard attaches.

it opens as usual but the cursor is frozen mid screen and so the touch screen doesn't respond. Is there any way I can access the data / files in the Surface or unfreeze the cursor? I am

in a foreign country and really in a mess without access to my files so any help advise would be a godsend.

Is there anywhere to order the ZIF connectors for the Surface 3 tablets? I currently have one with a broken ZIF connector and can’t seem to find where to order one.

Hello

My ZIF connector broke with you by chance a reference, so that I could replace it?

tm.alexandrapsn - Responder

Be EXTREMELY CAREFUL when putting the new screen in!

I just broke a screen by barely applying any pressure at all when setting into the chassis!

The glass broke where the speaker cut out is.

I was very gentle and was just trying to adjust it slightly so it would set down into the frame properly.

I’ve done several iPad’s, iPhones, and a few other phones with no issues at all.

Will Helbing - Responder

On later models the black ZIF latch holds on better, DO NOT take it off if it is intact.

I broke the ribbon connector on my Surface 3, Is there a way of disabling the surface screen in device manager so it will only see the external display when it boots? I wants to default to the, now non existent, surface screen at boot/reboot. I have to wait till I know its on login, tap the power(putting it to sleep) tap it again to wake it up. THEN it recognizes the external display and will then out put to it.

the RF Shield on the display connector can be removed with the least amount damage by prying up on the center tab of the left or right sides, The center tang has hole in it that is used for prying the shield off. Almost 0 damage.

byronklarson - Responder

The battery was bulging on my Surface 3 and started lifting the screen away from the frame on one side. I started to gently lever the screen some more but within seconds it cracked. Amazingly fragile and obviously never designed for any home repair. Glad I never got round to buying a replacement battery :-(

What type of adhesive do we use to attach the replacement display?
