When doing sports, it's common to get some damage - from small tears to big rips. Even on swimtrunks, sharp coral or equipment can make a hole. If you've got access to a sewing machine, these can often be quickly patched up! This guide will walk you through at a level suitable for beginners and upwards.

Identify the tear or hole in your garment and note the size: is it a large tear or a small tear?

Turn the item inside-out, and lay it on a flat and clean surface with the tear fully exposed. Inspect the tear, and use scissors to gently cut any frayed edges.

Extra: If the fabric is wrinkled or creased, use a hot iron to smooth the area around the repair first.

Pinch the seam together carefully, to create an accurate match. Ensure there is enough fabric pinched together to fit underneath the sewing machine foot, and be sewn together.

Use sewing pins to tack the two sides together. The goal is to hold the fabric in place, in exactly the same orientation as you had it pinched by hand. This is an important step, as it will determine the location and accuracy of the final repair.

Time to sew the repair closed! Take time to set up the sewing machine, and create a clean and open area to work in.

Tip: Use the iFixit resources for setting up a sewing machine, and practicing basic stitch techniques on some scrap fabric first.

Carefully offer up the item to the sewing machine, and position one end of the repair under the needle, and depress the foot to hold the item in place. Set the machine to a straight stitch.

Take care: remove the tacking pins one-by-one as needed - they must not run under the sewing machine, or it may break the sewing machine needle.

Make a locking stitch by using the reverse lever, and then make a single stitch along the length of the seam. At the end, secure the stitch with another lock stitch.

Note: Depending on the fabric, repeat the stich 1.2 times if needed, for extra durability.

Remove the items from the sewing machine and inspect the repair. The old edges will be uneven, but the new stitch should look secure and well fastened on both ends.

Tip: Turn the item right-way-round and inspect it from the outside too. Does it look correct? This will be the final appearance of the repair, so any small adjustment should be made at this stage, by making additional stitches or unpicking and re-stitching any errors.

Carefully cut away the excess fabric which is no longer needed. Make the cut carefully, and not too close to the stitching, or the repair will break during use. Remove any sharp corners of fabric to prevent any itchiness during use.
