Windows was still unable to install the driver. Using win 7 home prem x64 and my code is 28

    Yeah same issue here.

I had same problem and what helped was to install 2 updates - User-Mode and Kernel-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download...

    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com...

in Device manager maybe i uninstalled xbox devices including its drivers (right click the devices) - unsure if necessary. Restart computer, plug-in Xbox controller and again in Device manger click to update xbox drivers. Unsure if this tutorial should be updated with this information.

Do you have the fat adapter or the slim one? The slim one is Win10 only.

I assume this does not work with the new version of the dongle

Jason Douglas - Responder

The small one only works in Windows 10. The fat one works in 7/8.x and 10. There is a dedicated W10 guide with a warning related to drivers.

My dongle has version 1713 printed on it (tiny font) and it worked on W7. Some details here

Thank you. It's a shame. Such intentional and shady practices from Microsoft, blockade on a driver. You seem to really know your stuff… do you know if the Windows 10 dongle has features the old one does not? Since I don't even need to google it to know the old dongle is no longer for sale outside of second-hand.

Jason Douglas - Responder

Not that I'm aware of.

I can still find the old one new so it's available. I doubt it's discontinued.

I know this post is old… but I found it to be of the only help so far…

I got hung up on Step 4. Can you please explain in detail how to “Locate the folder where the driver is downloaded, and select Copy address as text. Paste this location into the box under Search for drivers in this location: “ ? I have literally tried everything and couldn’t get to that point. I am still getting Windows was unable to install your XBOX ACC Windows could not find driver software for your device. If you know the manufacturer…blah blah blah etc etc.

I’m thinking you’re downloading the x86 driver and trying it on x64 Windows or the other way around. Click the driver name and check the OS compatibility.

If you still can’t get it to work, make a Answers post.

My problem is more embarrassing (rolling eyes) I found out by calling Microsoft Support and through some troubleshooting that I had an Xbox One Wireless Adapter for Windows 10. It is not compatible with Windows 8.1 . You have to buy a separate Xbox Wireless Adapter (older version I am assuming) that is compatible with Win 7/8.1 and up. Which I promptly placed an order on Amazon…lol. You do though have to go here: https://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how-to-... in order to do this step when you run Device Manager > Xbox Peripherals (legacy) > Xbox Controller > right click to > Update Driver Software > Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer > under Common hardware types choose the Xbox Controller or it will pop up a box to Update Driver Software-Xbox Controller''' (which I did for now until I get the right wireless adapter that is compatible (lol) (more)

(cont.) make sure that the Show compatible hardware is checked. Under Model select Xbox Controller and it will update. If you get an error message of a Digitally Signed error of some kind… go here: https://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how-to-... and what worked for me is Option One: Enable Test Signing Mode. Make sure that you follow Option One''' to turn off the test sign in or otherwise you lose the ability for Microsoft to scan drivers for a digital signature. (keeps malware out of your system for the most part) Then restart your system and the Windows Test Mode water mark should go away. Will post back when I get the fix too.

Request Update. Now the Links are only good for Windows 10. Downloaded all 3 Microsoft - Net Links. None will work. Win 7 x64 Professional. Controller Model 1708

sgtflowerschris - Responder

That’s not something I can correct right away.

While Win7 is EOL on 1/14/2020, so I may not do anything but I’ll see what I can do. I REALLY HOPE I have a backup for Win7 x64 :(.

Unbelievable… I already have some hesitation because I want to wait it out until Ryzen 3000 notebooks become available but this is bullshit.

Nick -

I have the backup for 7 x64, but not x86. We’re not entirely screwed :-).

Probably not ideal I didn’t preserve the old version for x86 but it’s probably not an issue - most games pretty much demand 7 x64 anyway.

Nick -

Unfortunately they didn’t provide Windows 7 drivers for the newer, smaller adapter.

I received this combo pack as a gift https://postimg.cc/BLFSZpLM and I’m currently unable to run the controller wirelessly under Win7 x64. I’m 100% certain this can’t be achieved for x86 either.

My particular model is 1790.

Andrei Vasile - Responder

You need to extract the cab file and then point to that folder. Winrar will extract cab files.

Da Hadster - Responder

Hi, has anyone got the new small adapter to work on windows 8.1?

HitmanHBN - Responder

That one is Win10 only :(.

Nick -

Thank a lot for the X86 drivers i was breaking my head for an hour to find these drivers

Nikesh Gupta - Responder

It’s absolutely insane they did removed the drivers from download. Drivers should remain online forever, if they want people to continue buying their products.

That’s x86 and x64 drivers. &&^& Microsoft.

Game Boy - Responder

Works 100%. I just returned to Windows 7 because Windows 10 is trash. The drivers are impossible to find for Windows 7, but God sent you to help us! Also, &&^& Microsoft for hiding these drivers for Windows 7 users. Thanks a ton!!!!
