This procedure can become very dangerous and costly if the steps are not followed correctly. Mixing up the positive and negative leads or touching them together can cause electric shock. Nonetheless, the process is rather simple and should only take you about 10-20 minutes to complete, and an additional 2-4 hours for the battery to charge.

First of all, you will need some kind of battery charger. It can be any type of battery charger with a positive and negative lead (Red and Black grips).

Once your leads are connected, you can lower the hood (Don't slam it down) so that the cables do not get damaged.

Leave your car to charge for at least 3 hours, or even overnight! keep in mind that if you only charge it for 2 or 3 hours, you will need to drive it around (or just leave the engine running) for another hour so that the engine will finish the charge.

Once the charge is complete, follow the instructions backwards to put everything back into place.

VERY clear instructions on charging my wife’s 2009 Prius. Not rocket science, BUT I didn’t know where the terminals were, or if there were any special precautions with a hybrid. Thanks!

Last time I charge my 09 battery. I had to take it out of the back..A Big pain in the Butt “it was”
