Background and Identification
A guitar amplifier (also known as an amp) is an electronic system that strengthens a guitar’s weak electrical signal. Amplifiers can strengthen the signals on electric, bass, or acoustic guitars. They then produce sound through one or more loudspeakers which are generally contained in a wooden or metal cabinet.
Standalone and combination amplifiers are available. Standalone guitar amplifiers contain only the power amplifier and preamplifier circuits, so a separate speaker cabinet is required. A combination (or “combo”) amplifier contains the amplifier and one or more speakers within one cabinet. A wide range of sizes and power ratings for amplifiers are available for various musical applications.
Guitar amplifiers can also modify a guitar’s tone by enhancing or strengthening certain frequencies and de-emphasizing others. Modern guitar amplifiers use a 1/4-inch input jack. Electric guitars use an electro-magnetic pickup to feed signals to the amplifier. Acoustic guitars, however, use a piezoelectric pickup using a patch cord or a wireless transmitter to send signals to the amplifier.
The first powerful amplifiers and speaker systems were invented during the 1920s for movie theaters and public address systems. After 1927, smaller, portable systems were designed to be plugged into regular wall sockets and became popular with musicians. Stromberg-Voisinet sold the first electric stringed instrument and amplifier package in 1928.
