Battery does not charge.

First off, I'd like to say that this is entirely my fault and I understand that the damage I have done to my mac may be irreversible :/.

A few days ago my charger's cable got caught in my door and was severed. I put it back together, got the polarity wrong and plugged it into my computer. I smelled that awful "frying silicon" smell and immediately disconnected it and switched polarity.

Now my battery does not charge. My machine recognizes that the charger is plugged in, but the lights on the battery do not flash to indicate that is charger, and OSX tells me it's "plugged in, not charging." I have two batteries and have switched them out to see if I broke my battery.

Somehow, it seems that my mac is running off both the battery AND the charger at once. I can tell this because when i broke my charger my batter was at 15%. it slowly (over the course of the past week) has decreased to 10%. When I remove the battery (and leave the charger plugged in,) my mac shuts off. I thought macs could run with no battery?

Basically, I know I've broken stuff. What do i replace? I've seen some mention of a left I/O board, but does this manage the power of the computer? is there a DC power board as there is in my old iBook? Do I need to break out the checkbook and purchase a whole new Logic Board?

Thanks so much,

Nathan

p.s. I assume that once my battery fully dies (probably another 3 days) I will not be able to start my mac to do any diagnosis. My situation is dire. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Solução escolhida

Start with a known good charger- see if that's where the fault lies. If that doesn't change anything the next thing to do would be to replace the DC-in board. Verify that one matches your machine.

OR since you have two batteries Newer Tech makes an external battery charger. That might be a cheaper solution all round.
