The late 2005 Power Mac G5 was introduced in October, and discontinued in August the next year. There were three configuration options, one dual core processor at 2.0 GHz, one dual core at 2.3 GHz with model number A1177, and one dual core dual processor (quad core) at 2.5 GHz.

what you you mean "as backup"? You want to backup the iMac to the G5? Boot the G5 in target disk mode it will act like an external HD - AFAIK to do this you have to connect them via Firewire.

why is this not answerable? looks like machead provided an answer here..

This Original Question was very unclear about what David was asking. He didn't reply, but 4 days later he restated his Question. Neither of which are really "repair related" IMHO.

I agree with pollytintop on this. As long as it keeps his G5 out of the dumpster, it does follow the mission of ifixt. An answer has been provided and therefore should not be marked as not answerable.

I would say no you cant use it as a backup but if you find a way you should call a technician or tech support to help you.

Boot the G5 in target disk mode it will act like an external HD - AFAIK to do this you have to connect them both via Firewire - if your other Mac doesn't have Firewire you'll have to put the drive in an external USB case. Then sell the machine as is or for parts.

Esta resposta foi dada inicialmente para uma outra pergunta.

Take the HD out and put it in an external case. Then you can use TimeMachine or any 3rd party software you'd like. You could also purchase OS X server an run it.

The G5 tower can be networked with the iMac. If you are running PowerPC programs (in 32bit), you may even use it as part of a render farm (ie. with older versions of AfterEffects, FCP, or Compressor).

As stated by MacHead3, you can start the G5 Tower in target-mode and use its' drives as back-up storage. (That still seems like a really big external drive).

I have a mid 2011 imac 27" i5 but use my late 2005 G5 quad networked as both a back-up and spare. Firewire 800/400 connection may even be better given sufficient space. The iMac had a major issue with a faulty HDD but I enjoyed using the G5 again. Only trouble is the legacy applications are getting harder to find for PPC Leopard or Tiger. So it's even more important to keep a back-up of that too.
