Dead screen, no wifi, but everything else seems fine

Hi Guys,

i managed to pick up a second hand macbook pro unibody 2009 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo in pretty bad shape for less than an absolute steal. I originally had no hope for the unit, but here i am actually typing this message on it.

So far everything seems to work - i gave it a thorough clean, and installed my other macbook pro's old hard drive into it (it had lion on already from the other macbook pro - i upgraded to an SSD in that one, and just kept the drive in case of something going wrong). I also replaced the 1gb memory module with 2 2GB modules (also from my other macbook pro).

when i did the clean out and hard drive install i saw that there were three pins broken / missing on the logic board where the screen cable attaches to the board. (the long row of teeth looking pins - about 1/3rd of the way in there are three missing / broken / damaged.

I have taken the logic board out and on the bottom the mic cable is also busted (someone must have tried a shoddy repair job as it looks like its been attempted but not succeeded. I've checked and the mic doesn't work.

so, i'm currently typing this on the machine, all working (isight camera as well), plugged into an external screen.

The two things that worry me are the cost for the new logic board - is it worth it? and that the wifi isn't working (but could this be a lion fault?)

is spending 600 bucks on a new board worth it? and how can i test to see if the wifi is working.

i can't boot into recovery mode as there isn't one by the looks of it? and also it doesn't like the external screen for the boot process... it only activates once you're in Lion.

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

A new "used" board for this would only be $350.00 at most. Not $600.00. Watch this store in ebay

http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_nkw=macb...

They will discount the boards to clear out inventory. I saw the board you need for $275.00 about 2 weeks back. The ebay store is Laptopaid. I have bought parts from there and have never had a problem.

There is also this supplier for boards http://www.ascendtech.us/search.aspx?s=m...

Bought a board from them and had no issues with it at all.

Hope this helps!!

Thanks guys, so i eventually went with the 2.53GHz logic board at ascend tech as they had stock showing. I've also tossed out the optical drive bay for a extra hard drive bay and might use one of my extra SSD's to boost the performance.

it works a treat so far on the external screen and with the 4GB of ram from my other macbook's upgrade.

my only concern is not still that the wifi doesn't work - i haven't managed to update any lion software, nor managed to download it and make a boot drive from a USB.

is the wifi going to be a software issue of could it be hardware related? is there a way to check that the wifi board is connected / working (besides the obvious dismantle and physically inspect)?

Thanks,

Chris

Thanks everyone.

I wanted to go with Ascendtech but now apparently they don't ship internationally. crock of... anyways, lol.

i then thought about using the dtt service, but with minimum costs of like 70 USD each way for shipping and 350 for the board repair, I plumbed for another online for 500...

Will post feedback once received and installed... and hopefully working...

cheers,

por

You can get your logic board repaired at DT&T for $350. I've used these guys a few times and they did OK by me: http://www.dttservice.com/macbookpro.htm...
