Why can I only use my PowerBook every other day?

I have recently re-built my 1 GHz Powerbook due to a backlight problem that was not the inverter. Following the site's instructions I succeeded and it booted up just fine. The following day it did not want to know. Took the battery out and left the AC disconnected. 24 hours later BINGO!

Tried PRAM and PMU resets but still after use I have to leave it disconnected from AC with the battery out for 24 hours before it will start up.

One thing I did notice was that although the battery meter showed 100% when unplugged from AC it was only 2 minutes before the critic power warning came on the screen.

I'm sure this has to be something simple but could anyone tell me how simple?

Update

Finally got a successful result. Down at my local Mac Swap-Shop I got a used PRAM battery still giving out over 3 volts, but not as high as a new one, and my new AC battery arrived. Now both are installed the old PB is sleeping and waking like it always did.

Thanks for your help guys

Your machine is old enough to probably need a new PRAM battery. To verify, check your date and time when you boot, with it disconnected from the internet. For the correct part and installation instructions please give us the last three figures of your serial number. Thanks

Many thanks for your answer, sorry for the delay in responding, have been away for a few weeks. Point noted about the PRAM battery, will try that, am also looking at new main battery as the one I have goes from full charge to emergency power level in about 30 seconds.

The date goes back to 1.1.1970 when I switch off and the serial number is W841600G NRZ

Thanks for your help

Yep, your PRAM batt is dead!

Hi guys

Thanks for the responses. I swapped out the PRAM battery for a spare that I had but I wasn't sure of its state of health.

Soon as I'd done this the PB booted up as 1.1.70 as I expected but appeared to work normally. I put the PB to sleep to test and it would not wake up. Disconnected and reconnected power and no joy. Disconnected and reconnected the second PRAM and it booted up. Here's the new oddity. Each time after the PRAM was disconnected I got a black screen after boot up chime on the first and second try. Then on the third try got the black screen for maybe 4 second and then grey then the normal boot up sequence. Does this indicate anything other than dead PRAM battery?
