Change battery and check connections

I found my flip camcorder from 15 years ago. I plugged it in and it did turn on and showed a picture of a battery in the red. For a brief moment, I was able to get the device to start charging. However, when I came back later to look, it said charging paused check battery connection. I plugged it into my computer to see if I could remove my recordings from it. It can’t retain enough charge in order to bring up the data. Can you help me?

First thing to do is buy a new battery. After 15 years, the original is toast, so I'd frankly be surprised if it worked at all. It takes a specific rechargeable battery pack, but the user manual states you can use either two or three Lithium AAA batteries, depending on exactly which generation yours is.

iFixit doesn't have a guide for the specific repair you want to do, but fortunately the batteries in your camcorder are designed to be replaced by the user. The first three steps of the teardown guide show you how to open it up to access the battery.

Once you have the battery out, check the spring contacts on top and bottom for any sign of corrosion; you'll need to clean it off if there's any present, then insert new batteries.
