I have this laptop and it is on and connected to a monitor via HDMI but nothing is showing on the screen, the laptop is on but nothing is showing on the screen.

The laptop may be powered on but that doesn't mean that it has loaded the operating system.
Try a full power refresh and check if that fixes it.
Turn off the laptop if it is on and disconnect the charger from the laptop (if connected).
Open the laptop and disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard. You don't have to remove the battery, just disconnect it. - seen at 1:14 minutes into this teardown video
Remove the coin cell battery¹ from the motherboard - see image below
¹ When the coin cell battery is out, measure its voltage. If it is <2.5V DC or if the battery is >4-5 years old replace it. The part number should be on the battery e.g. CR2032
Press and hold the laptop's Power button operated for a full 30 seconds and then release it.
Reinsert the coin cell battery, (+ve on top as marked on the battery), reconnect the battery cable, reassemble the laptop, connect the charger, turn on the laptop and check once the laptop has loaded the OS whether there's a display on the external monitor.

Is there a display seen on the laptop's screen when starting the laptop before switching to the external monitor?
Has it displayed OK before on the external monitor?

I forgot to mention that the screen is broken and doesn't turn on anymore, so I've been using a tv via HDMI and it's just not working now

Have you tried pressing Fn+ F9 keys (both together)?
Have you tried using a different known working HDMI cable or connecting to a different monitor?
