electrical connector for front sensor cable came off board-how to put

When reconnecting the front sensor cable, step 23 Google Pixel Tablet Screen Replacement, the white connector came off the board. I've been trying to get the pins on the connector to slide back into the board without success. It keeps sliding on top of the gold prongs that come out of the board. How was the connector affixed to the board?

Better yet what can I do to repair it? And why do you think the connector wouldn't slide into the prongs as they appear to do in the image. I've included a pic of the situation.
