You could try accessing the BIOS and making sure the drive you want to boot from is first in the boot order settings. To access the BIOS you need to press the BIOS key (during startup before the operating system loads) which varies from device to device, but could likely be either ESC or F2 on your device. Then you can change the boot order settings. If that doesn't work you can try updating the BIOS to see if it resolves the problem.

@zooeydecko this "operating system not found" just means that your computer can't find what it needs (Windows 7 in your case) to start. This could be because of a corrupt Master Boot record or any other needed Windows system file.

It can also mean that your computer can't access the drive where your Windows is located on. You may have a failed drive. You did not tell us if this is a Hard drive or and SSD. Looking at the laptops age etc. we'll have to assume it uses a HDD.

First you want to check your BIOS. Turn your laptop on while holding down the F2 key. That should get you into the BIOS. There check to see what it tells you about the boot drive and see if your HDD is even listed. If your BIOS can't find your drive it most likely has failed. If your BIOS does see the HDD as boot drive you may need to reinstall your OS (Win7) to the drive. Next you want to try to reset your BIOS. Click on the default button and OK this. Then save your changes and exit the BIOS. See if it now boots.

Next you can change the Boot order to USB and use a bootable USB drive and see if it boots. If so, your computer is okay but your drive is not.

Considering the age of the laptop, and if this is still the original drive, my prime suspect is a bad HDD. You may need to replace it and then reinstall your OS. If you do, consider replacing the HDD with an SSD. Less wear and way quicker access :-)

Since iFixit does not yet have a specific guide for this, use something like this video

While you work on your laptop, take lots of pictures. Once you are done with it, take those pictures and create a guide for iFixit. That will help the next person that has a device with the same issues as you do. It's easy and fun to create these guides. https://ifixit.com/Guide/new The iFixit community will appreciate this.

The operating system may need to be reloaded from an external connection if it was deleted from the computer or if you replaced the hard drive.
