Due to the phillips screw being too tight, I was unable to complete step 14 in the guide to upgrade to Airport Extreme.
The screw in question holds what appears to be a grounding contact.
Airport works fine without it.
Am I putting my Mac at risk by having the Airport Extreme card not grounded (if it is a route to ground)?

I believe that grounds out to the top case.

Maybe both, as the contact was in touch with a fine metal mesh tube on situated just above the left USB ports.

Probably not, the airport card makes contact in many other places other then that contact.
