Hello, I bought this laptop of my friend- however he wanted to keep the original 250gb hard drive that came with it. I have the same hard drive however it is only 80gb...this isn't a problem because i store alot of my files on a external hard drive. I was wondering would installing the 80 gb hard drive affect the performance of the macbook as oppose to installing a 250gb hard drive?

I would get his original system installation disk, erase you hard drive using the "write zeros" option, give it one partition and install a new system and then do your upgrades.

Not likely. You'll probably just lose space at the most. However, you should leave at least 20% of the drive free to have space to work with and keep it fast if you can.

OR if doing so leaves less than 20% free space- RAM needs space for swapping. If there's lots more RAM on this box than your old one you might see a slowdown.
I recommend stripping the OS down to the point it is only the essentials, no drivers for printers, languages, fonts, nothing but the applications on the disk, or in the case of a retail disk, select nothing
nick - I really don't think that stripping down the system is needed. The systems not that big. In reality an 80 GIG drive is a lot of storage. It's only when people start loading up thousands of pictures, movies and more music than can listen to in a month that we start needing larger drives.
i always strip the OS down personally, but it's his call really, BTW, my 2ns laptop has ubuntu and windows 7 dualbooted evenly, i used 50% or less of the windows 7 partition, that and 320GB is big for me because i have 627.5MB of music, 1GB of movies, 498.6MB of downloads, 1.15GB of documents, 7.48GB of stuff on my desktop and I STILL have 209.14GB free
those usage stats of my stuff is on the Mac, my 2nd laptop has a LOT less of all that on it, so i always strip down the OS

I have come across alot of freezeing of the macbook, will the reason be because of the smaller hard drive?
