The March 2015 update of Apple's 13" MacBook Air features fifth generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors, resulting in slightly increased performance and battery life.

This is REALLY weird ... No Battery ... No Charger ... No Problem?

I have a MB Air from 2015 that came in for a board repair (Shorted caps on PPBUS_G3H).... so I get the unit back from the repair shop (They showed me the log in screen to demonstrate it boots up again).... They then DISCONNECTED the battery and I took the unit home (5 minutes away). When I got home I connected the battery up and to my amazement it was STILL ON the log in screen! I put the charger in and the battery went from 23% to 26% in a few minutes (Normal), then disconnected the AC, the battery then went quickly from 26% to 19% and then the screen went off or into sleep and wouldn't wake up , so I forced shut down, I then changed out the battery for another normal condition one which took around 5 minutes to do and when I connected the battery and opened the lid to boot up, it was STILL ON the login screen!

I shut don the laptop again normally..... Unconnected the AC waited 1 minute.... Power button to boot, apple log appears without any progress bar and in under 5 seconds we are at the log in screen (No MB Air from this era can possible boot so fast?) It feels a little hot on the case where the CPU is located..... compared to another unit of the same model and year it is a bit hotter. Fan is spinning normally. SMC & PRAM have been reset. Running Apple Diagnostics..... No issue found. Disconnected the battery once again, held the power button for more than 30 seconds and then a few more presses for good measure to drain any power that maybe in the board. Connected the battery, power on, 1-2 seconds later a chime, then the apple logo and 2 seconds later the log in scree is there. I let it go to sleep by itself, and when I press any key to wake it up, it chimes and immediately after it comes the log in screen. What is going on? I have never witnessed this before.....

@livfe you can login and your MBA functions properly?

@oldturkey03 The next problem is the owner hasn't used it in a few years and they do not know the passowrd anymore, and to reset the PW and or to clean install it stops at the icloud PW which is to sensitive at this time to change in case anything went funny and they lost their business data, they will come here in the next day or 2 to contact apple support to fix this. they changed their apple ID PW but it is giving an error cannot connect to apple icloud services, but this is another matter. I have not attempted to put in a different SSD with an active OS as yet. I don't want to try anything regarding PW's until we can get apple support. But the issue that is in front of me for now is how on earth is it 'booting' so fast and almost immediately displaying the log in screen as mentioned in the situations above as though it was always booted and waking up from sleep even with zero power source.. The unit goes to sleep and when it wakes up it chimes and immediately after displays a regular log in screen.

@oldturkey03 I tried a different SSD in it and it appears not to be tied to any iCloud account (Sign in available) and it appears to boot and behave totally normal for these units. When I put back the original SSD the behaviour is back to as it was discussed above.... strange.

@livfe I wonder if you can determine the settings. From a terminal type

pmset -g

Let us know what you get with that.

@oldturkey03 I have managed to wipe the SSD without the need for the PW and installing Monterey, everything is running as intended but was unable to check the system settings regarding hibernation.... I still can't get how it was immediately going to log in screen when everything is disconnected as surely that requires some power to display anything... really odd.

Give this a read how to make macbook pro hibernate when closing lid it’s likely the owner did this which is why you see the fast boot as recovery from Sleep mode is a bit slower.

But of course down vote this as it’s not an answer.

@danj I really do appreciate your input, you are a good help sometimes BUT it is again not an answer as an answer would provide a solution. Therefore it should be a comment. The unit is appearing to stay ON without any power source! And I notice I get 3 more down votes, I wonder who gave me them? The link you provided goes on the mention here's where the answer can be found:

http://www.karthikk.net/2011/12/put-mac-... ow-to/ 404 Sorry we couldn't find this page. It MIGHT be this or it MIGHT not be, until we can find out why then it is not an answer ;). I will look into this once we have bypassed the next step which is to contact apple support to reset the user password so we can log in to the account to access the settings and see if this can be something to do with it, only then I could check this possibility, confirm it, then put a definitive answer. Correct?

I wiped the SSD and installed a fresh Monterey system and everything appears to be running as intended, really odd how it required no power source to display the log in screen! Unfortunately in wiping the installation I was not able to check any system settings regarding the info that @danj hinted to....
