Well, my trackpad works fine when the computer starts up, but never fails to freeze after 5 minutes or so of use, sometimes earlier. Is this fixable? I can't imagine it being a connection problem if it works at the beginning of my session...

Upgrade your RAM memory, get new OS updates, go into system preferences-accounts-select your user on left of screen-click on the startup button-click the minus button to remove all the startup programs and finally go into disk utility and repair disk and repair disk permissions.

Thanks, nomodo. RAM and OS: done and done a while ago. Running 10.4.11 with 1.5 GB RAM and can't go any higher, as far as I know. No startup button in my system preferences, so I'm not sure how to remove startup programs. I'll research and continue on with your advice.
There is an option to remove "Login items." I'll try that...

All the machine freeze or only the trackpad ? If you connect a USB or bluethoot mouse does it work while the trackpad is dead ?
If you boot the machine holding down the "command"and "shift" keys is the trackpad working after boot up ?

Thanks for the questions, lemerise. Only the trackpad freezes, and the mouse always works fine (wireless USB). Please forgive my ignorance, but what does a "shift-command" boot do? I haven't seen that on lists of boot combos...
