What is the best way to clean a matte LCD?

I dropped a bike helmet on the screen while it was open. Don't ask.

I used some iKlear solution and a microfiber cloth after the incident and a lot of the marks came away as they were just plastic rubbings. But there are a few marks left and I'm pretty sure I've actually truly scratched the screen but I want to be sure before I take it to the genius bar and cross my fingers (or get laughed out).

So what is the absolute best way to really truly clean this matte display and find out if what I've done is physical or cosmetic?

I'm assuming that's my only course of action, but I'm all ears if someone has a better idea.

Apple says don't use anything harsh (chemicals). If the genius says it's not a warranty fix you could try going to an Auto store and looking at what they have to "fix" scratches on headlamp covers. (Basically a rubbing compound). A Jewelry store may be able to help - they often buff watch crystals. The problem is not to rub through the cover or use a strong chemical that will fog it.

Thanks for the response, just want to clarify one point -- you're saying there's a rubbing compound that would or could or might be safe to use on the LCD screen?

What I 'm suggesting is that if it's not warrantied, and you can buff it you're ahead the cost buying a replacement display. (nothing ventured, nothing gained) Another place to stop and ask might be an auto glass shop. They "fix" chips in auto glass using a resin & UV light... maybe that would work.

Most likely it is scratched. If you lightly and carefully drag your fingernail across the marks, you should be able to feel the imperfections. There may be a process to make it a little better, but there is nothing out there to "fix" lcd scratches.

As for cleaning a matte lcd screen, OptiMist Prime by ShaggyMax is the best we have come across: Link text. It does not contain polymers as some others which smear and make a mess.
